Im not sure if i should even attempt this but i have a large queen palm that im not to fond of. it has about 12-15 feet of clean trunk. i was thinking of beheading it and carve it into a tiki head. now im thinking that if there was anyway i could get it to lean into my yard at around a 45 degree or more angle it would look like a poor mans coco. any ideas of how to pull this off or am i just asking to crush myself into my lawn?

Go for it! Dig it a bit and pull it over with a truck. Do it half way and let it straighten up for a year and then do it the rest of the way next year. Queens upright very quickly and you'll end up with a kink if you don't do it in multiple moves.

Good idea to soak it. Be careful, don't hurt yourself.

There is one in Vista that fell onto a fence this winter and is already starting to curve. Looks really good. I would def bury a 4X4 post to match the angle (if you have room) and hold it up to be safe, create a 'U' with some wood at the end of it to support it. You don't want to risk that thing falling and screwing something or someone up! Let me know if you need some help.

It's amazing what a case of Pabst, some heavy duty webbing, and about 10 palm society members can do.

Or get just one Ken Johnson. I saw him dehusk a coconut with his bear hands.

Go for it you guys !!!!!

I have a couple Queens that I leaned over and they look great.

Even did it to a big W. robusta that has looks great and has now asked to have brom's planted on the level part of its trunk.

Only advice I can offer is make a brace, I used two 2x4's in a X shape, to keep it upright while it reroots.

It's too cool, you guys help each other on projects like this.

Be well and safe to all,

tom

Of course, some say that kinky queens can have their charms, too . . . . .

Make sure to cut some roots first. If not you can have a mess for several reasons. It is BEST if the palm is loose and then you must stake it up when it gets over to the spot where you want to stop.

Hey Aloetom, how long did you brace it for? how did yu lower it to where you wanted it. im thinking that if i dig at it and cut some roots once i start pulling on it it might want to just come crashing down...

Steve. Common sense is very valuable here. You may want to tie it back to something so it does not go too far and for sure don't try it all at once. A little at a time is the way to go so you know how hard to pull and how far to go. If it moves easily it will come over. Too hard and it will snap.

Hi Steve,

I kept the braces up for a year.

I lower it into place with the help of several other guys, and the biggest had only about 9 feet of clear trunk at the time, so it wasn't so bad. I plan to do some at our ranch as time permits, and they are much bigger, so I think I'll cut the roots on the high side this summer and then in winter when the ground is soft from rain, pull/push them over.I would tie them off to a couple different points to give you some back-up, in case they want to come crashing down.

Also a "come a long" would be good to have on hand. I have moved lots of big palms by myself using one.

Let me know if you need any other help/ideas, I'm glad to help.

Take your time and think it out, but trust me it's worth the effort, they look great after being leaned.

Good luck, be safe,

Tom

I've never purposely tried to arch a queen palm trunk. Back many years ago my double queen palm in my front yard was blown over on a 45 degree angle by Hurricane Jeanne -- and I just left it that way. Today it has regrown vertical again, but the angle is not sweeping like a graceful coconut palm. This is a result of geotropism.

What livistona is that one Walt?

Rafael: The palmate palms you see are Sabal palmetto (not Livistona). I just had them trimmed earlier this spring.

I don't want to rain on your parade...But, the only way to do this safely is with heavy equipment..It will crush anything and everything if it falls...Moving a large Queen palm should not be taken lightly...

Laying it down can be done if you have a large yard to handle a mistake. But, even then if the weight is not controlled your asking for trouble...Hire a tree service with experience moving large palms and save yourself the expense of cleaning up a mistake later...My .02

I say drink the beer then cut head off and carve up the trunk!! Off with the queen's head!!

Cause lies don't need an aero plane / To chase you anywhere
