How long dose it take to germinate seeds of beccariophoenix alfredii. I got my seeds from Rare Palm Seeds. I soaked them for 24 hours the day i received them. then sown them in a propagator, at 25-30C. 2.5 weeks on no sign of germination.

Got mine about 1 month ago from RPS as well and they have also germinated w/ a heat mat.

They are very viable seed w/ excellent germination rates. You should be fine, just give it a bit more time.

Give them a very open, light mix. They are prone to damping off when young. Once they get past the 1-2 leaf seedling stage they are trouble free vigorous growers and put out a lot of roots fast.

I seeds germinated in a week. I acquired mine from Ortanique and they were really fresh. I find the palm to grow pretty fast in the Summer and is slows down quite a bit in the Winter.

A month to 6 weeks is normal for all the Beccariophoenix. B alfredii likes cooler drier condtions than B sp windows or even B madagascariensis. Too hot wet and humid will make B alfredii rot quickly. The same conditions that make B alfredii rot, makes B sp windows thrive. It has everything to do with the wild habitats of the different species. B alfredii comes from the per humid mountain area of central Madagascar whereas B sp windows comes from humid lowland rainforest.

An easy and very satisfying palm to grow.

Best regards

Tyrone

If ambient temperature is between 25 and 30 C do I still need to place the seeds on a heat mat?

No, I’d say they are fine without the mat with those temps.

Mine are community potted in tubs placed in my greenhouse which sees daytime highs of 37C (100F) and lows of 27C (80F).  Just started seeing germination two weeks ago after planting them the first week of June.

My Alfredii seeds never sprouted. I purchased them from Rare Palm Seeds in Dec. 2019 and no germination yet,  Aug. 2021.  Where did you get yours and how can I order some?

Mine came from RPS as well, I purchased bulk 1000 seeds and received them June 2, 2021.  I'm using the same process for these as I did the previous seed I ordered several years ago.

I recall thinking how beautiful the seeds were, but looks are deceiving I guess as apparently they were not viable. I doubt there's a chance they will sprout now, so I'm looking to buy more and try again.

mari: Is Ortanique still around in 2021. If so, how do I contact them?

Somewhat off topic as I didn't start w/a seed, but someone did.  Any hu I planted a 1 gallon FB plant 10 months ago.  It's done GREAT.  Shade cloth cover came off after about 4 months.

I planted mine on the 26th of February, almost 7 weeks now. Some in a propagator, some in bags, some in pure perlite, some in perlite+compost. No germination yet. Ambient temperature is 21C but they are sitting on heat mats. Under grow light + light from a window. No direct sun. What am I doing wrong? I got the seeds from RPS. Could it be the tap water I used?

If I recall all mine had a thin outer coating that came off readily and was removed before soaking and planting.  Was this removed?

I don't think tap water would matter as that's what I used for my soak as well.

Could be bad seeds.... unfortunately a common occurrence with RPS.

I hope they will start sprouting soon. Perhaps 7 weeks is not that long...

Meanwhile, all rupicola seeds sprouted but then the roots rotted.

I've ordered seeds from RPS for many years....with varying success. Sometimes they arrive in appalling condition, and many times they never reply to my (very polite) complaints. My strategy now is ONLY order from the new arrivals list. That way, I reduce issues due to their iffy storage situation. Even thus, it's a gamble. Sometimes I am tempted, other times more wary.
