They installed the landscaping for the new store near me in Dallas with their signature Crossed Palms.

These are the standard palms they will be using at all their new stores in the Metroplex.

Being from "down under" I am not familiar with "In and Out Burgers". Do they have a laxative effect??

Growing palms in the warm temperate zone at 35°S latitude. Not much frost (or heat either), but plenty of wind and rain. Ave temp about 15.5°C (60°F), Rainfall about 1400mm (55 inches).

For me they go down easy and come out fast...but well worth it.

Just to help you out, It was one of the first Drive thru's in So Cal... I think in the 1940's.... Thus the name.

Also a very large "privately" owned chain. So pretty uniform in their quality and approach. Unique business to be sure.... ALWAYS has a line anywhere near lunch time.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Jokes aside (good one wildpalm!) In and Out is a rather iconic burger chain that, until very recently, was unique to Southern California. They're unique in a variety of ways, including not using frozen beef for their burgers. This has limited their expansion because they need to have their distribution centers within a certain distance from the eateries to ensure no rotten meat en route. But now, like the obesity epidemic, they're expanding, to Texas, yee haw. I expect them to take TX by storm but only time will tell.

I'm not a big burger fan, but, when I want one, I & O is where I go. THey're good! Simple, basic, the perfect thing after a day of drag racing, palm ogling, or even a palm society meeting.

Just burgers, fries, shakes on the menu. No salads, fish, chicken, sushi, rice, sprouts, etc.

Power vegans are very scarce there.

Keep us apprized of your I & O experience, if you have one, TDFW!

it's simply the best fast food burger you can get....IMHO.

I might add, the only issue I have with in and out burger is the drive thru lines... Often out the parking lot and down the street. Due to the burgers popularity.

They often hire college students at a few bucks above the minimum wage. So the service is above par for fast food.

Mc Donalds could learn from I n O !

Btw the way, they use Washingtonia's in the landscape here in Cali.

You Cali guys are sorely misguided on burger taste. I love In-n-Out burger, but Texas has Whataburger. Whataburger is the pinnacle of fast food burger.

I dunno Buffy. Having experienced both Whataburgers and I/O burgers, I will have to cast my vote for I/O. I was very happy to read this thread to find out that there is an I/O less than 1000 miles away from me. Tony, please let me know exactly where it is - I will have to make a detour next time I am in Dallas. Trees look good BTW.

Sounds like a PRA investigation for the locals. The burgers sound good too. As far as the crossed planting of palms, I like the look, using large palms was also smart, but the idea to mix the two species I don't agree what their thinking was based on. Thanks.

Ooh, I have to disagree :) I cant stand Whataburger, just about all of the ones in north central Florida went out of business. I guess everyone has their own taste though. Now for a great burger try Five Guys, we used to drive 40 minutes from where I went to school to get them!

There has been some discussion on the 5 guys versus In n out out here. Both are really good, but my feeling is:

5 guys peanuts with meal :greenthumb:

In n Out "big" burgers :greenthumb:

5 guys "big burgers fall apart

5 guys small burgers :greenthumb:

Fries...in n out animal style!!! :greenthumb:

5 guys fries.. dunno, not had them yet..

Im not a big fan of the Five Guys fries, they arent as crispy as I like fries to be. I tried Animal Style but it just didnt work for me, though I could see why others would like it. Its funny that the discussion has drifted from palms to burgers :-D

Since when were crossed palms a signature of In and Out Burger? I don't recall seeing that at any of them here in Cali. Sabal Palmetto. We should have more of those in California. Sometimes I'm probably looking at one and don't know that's what it is, but of course the vast majority of fan palms planted here are Washingtonia. Why not more Sabal or even Pritchardia?

Why not live in the tropics?

Man I miss In and Out Burgers!!! I wish they'd open a few here in SW Florida. They blow away 5 Guys!!!

In CA, they do the same "crossed palm" effect, except with Washingtonia robusta. My guess is that S. palmetto is more cold hardy for the climate in Dallas?...
