Read here from the memorials on the loss of a palm explorer with original connections to the "Foxy Lady" palm.

Rich Trapnell leaves us

Here's some Foxy Lady palms growing or grown at various Queensland gardens at different timelines. Photos obtained from previous posts here on the board.

If you like why not add some more as a tribute

Here is a compot of Veitchia arecina seedlings I recently recvd as a gift from old friends in Mackay . You can see the obvious leaf variation on a few of them , the mother plant is right beside a large Foxtail so chances are good .

I had the pleasure of meeting Richie a few times at Mikeys place in Cairns.

Mikeys mate Philip up at Mareeba has some very large ones , maybe from the first made at Richies nursery Rosebud Farm .

He had some viable looking seeds a few tears ago

A google of Richies name brings up on top a post of mine from Peter Sargents recent Mad Hatters Party @Whyanbeel.

Palms are life, the rest is details.

It just occurred to me that many may not know that a "Foxy Lady" palm is a hybrid between Wodyetia bifurcata and Veitchia, the original mentioned here is V.joannis but also from V.arecina.

Often these hybrids were variegated which required shade from burning, the full green were usually the stronger growers in full sun.

Here's a pic of one I used to grow, quite a startling variegation, nice until the hot dry sun cooked the yellow portions.

Wal, i hope a lot of folk post their pics of their "Foxy Lady". I cant beleive i dont have 1 to show as we have been regular buyers off Rich and the Crew at Rosebud for the past 18 years plus but never bought one? . Rich as well as creating the "Foxy lady" was responsible for the introduction of SO SO MANY NEW palms into horticulture. We have a great selection of recent buys and palms we have grown on from Rich that will be planted in a memorial garden here. Four palms very notable palms amongst these that Rich introduced are Tahina spectabalis, Dypsis malcomberii ( Many thanks to Arden Dearden for donating 1 here) and Dypsis Black mananjarensis(Dark mealy) and Dictyocaryum Lamarckianum. Rich was a very humble, gentle, kind, giving man and he Really knew his stuff but Never boasted. I wish i was at "Rosebud" last night with the other 300 friends to farewell Rich. What Rich created at "Rosebud" will live on. Wal, Rich would be chuffed you started this thread for him, good on you. cheers Pete

Here are some shots of Rich's Foxy Ladies at Rosebud Farm taken in Nov 2005. He led my wife and I on a tour of his garden back then. He very kindly allowed us to go wandering around even though he was a busy man trying to run a business. I'll never forget the visit. I saw him again briefly in July 2007, just as he was about to fly out to Sydney. That was the last time we met. He was such a nice guy and the coolest palm dude I knew. I'm sure he would approve of that description.

Rich told me on his tour with us that these Satakentias were his favourite palms (maybe one of his favourites at the time). I remember him saying something about a lawnmower guy cutting too close to the trunk on one of them. It damaged the trunk or something and he repaired it, but I can't remember how. Going to Rosebud Farm was like palm overload. I was in heaven there but couldn't possibly take it all in. I was like a kid in a candy store overdosed on red food colouring. I nearly trod on a red bellied black snake when going through one of his older run down shade houses. The pots started to move weirdly near my feet and then I saw one part of the black snake over there, and another part of it 6ft away. I bolted, and when I told him, he just smiled and told me what type of snake it was-that it was poisonous but hadn't killed anyone yet. He related how a giant python tried to eat his puppies at 2am one morning in his house and he had to beat the thing away with a stick. These large pythons were now and again seen laying in the driveway waiting for the dogs to come by. That's the sort of place it was. He lived in paradise and he fitted in well with this scene. Their were a few times I had to ring him about a palm order I'd placed and you could here the thousands of frogs on the line after sundown from his end. Real paradise. :)

This is the only picture I have of Rich(on the left). :( He's way off in the distance and was taken by my wife as Rich and myself wandered off to discuss his palms that day. I'll never forget that day. He was well loved and will be sorely missed. A true palm pioneer, the coolest palm dude I knew.

Best regards

Tyrone

Not the best shot but it's my rear Foxy Lady bed in May this year. This was planted in late 2006. I can't find any pictures right after it was planted unfortunately.

And the front garden just last month. Everything started off at the same height when planted and although everything has grown well in the main, the Foxy Ladies own this bed and have become the canopy. They're probably my favourite palm and will always remind me of Rich.

I am really sad that I haven't met him yet... I was planning to go next year. I guess it is not meant to be :(. At least there is no more pain for him and we all have a palm or two that will remind us of him.

From what i have read on here Rich sounded like a real nice bloke who was dedicated to the palm world /

Old Beach ,Hobart

Rich was kind enough to send me 4 Foxy lady seedlings in early 2008. They duly made the 3000km trip due south, packaged perfectly, with a note "hope they grow well for you Michael. I have never sent any of these so far south, but give them a try ! Here's the amount owing (at your leisure)" - he was that laid back. I recall he only charged me around $10 per 20cm tall seedling, and I thought there must have been an error. I duly paid him and expressed my gratitude.

Unfortunately I killed one by my own negligence. One is in the ground and is 1metre tall. One was sent to Peachy earlier this year. And that leaves this one - which I want to keep potted (in case I ever move).

Thank you Rich. R.I.P

Regards

Michael.

Sorry to hear about Rich, guys like that will become part of the legend and lore of the palm world.

Nice pics fellas and Tyrone your garden looks great.

I've got a couple of what are supposed to be Foxy ladies, but they are so small I don't know how one can tell at this point. The source wasn't even sure.

We'll see, I imagine they grow pretty doggone fast.

The city of Santa Monica planted a bunch of Foxy Ladys along Ocean Avenue on the cliffs above the beach, but the cool (and relatively dry) onshore winds seem to be getting to them. I hope they can hold on and get thru it, but maybe like the Roystoneas the City also planted, these Foxy Ladys would like to be in a hotter, more wind-protected spot.

Why not live in the tropics?

I was very sad to hear the news of Richie's passing whilst I was down in Brisbane over the weekend talking to Grant Larkin at Palms for Brisbane.........I knew him when I was living in Cairns and since that time have made many purchases from him.....He will be sadly missed and leaves a huge gap in the industry.

Rich really got the Foxtail seed sent around the world in a big way, and without a Foxtail there would not have been a Foxy Lady, so it's still a tribute to him.
