Have to agree with others in that my image of Russia is completely changed. Did not expect to see such beautiful palms. Really liked the J. chilensis. Well done!

What a beautiful city.

Obviously well tended by many skillful gardeners.

Your latitude is almost exactly the same as mine but we get much less rain (about 20 inches/50 cm a year).

We hardly ever get snow here but we do have a number of frosts every year. Our summers are very hot and dry with many days over 100F/38C.

We can grow essentially the same species here but I must say the palms in your pictures look much better than most of ours - probably a combination of water and careful tending.

About those winterolympics in Sochi. Those are held in the Kaukasus mountains just to the north of the city. And the Kaukasus mountains are the highest mountains of Europe. Some areas also have temperate rainforest there becuse of the high rainfall.

Incredible beautifull palms...in.........Russia!!!!

I was expecting some stunted unidentified Phoenix with halve frost burned leaves...and what I see are incredible gardens full of beauties!!!

Alt:1030m. Native palms: Queen, B. eriospatha, B. microspadix, Allagoptera leucocalyx , A.campestris, Geonoma schottiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma. Subtr. climate, some frosty nights. No dry season. August: driest month. Rain:1700mm

What a wonderful, informative post! Thanks for the photos of the P. canariensis, Vlad. It is one of my favorite palms and to my knowledge there is only one on the Big Island of Hawaii where I live so it is always a treat to see one - even if it is only in a photo.

Located at 1500' elevation in Kona on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii.

Average annual rainfall is about 60"; temperature around 80 degrees.

Reintroducing Livistona and Syagrus in Russia

Today I was walking around Central and Khosta districts and found out something very interesting! For the first time since the end of Soviet Union, new palm trees were met in Sochi. Take a look and help tp ID, please! Today I'm going to use another photohost service, due technical problems with my flickr account.

Vlad the first palm is a Syagrus romanzoffiana, the second one I believe is a Butia of some sort. #1a I think is an Archontophoenix cunninghamiana. And #2 is definitely a Livistona chinensis. I'm glad they are planing new species in Sochi. The climate there can handle so many more varieties of palms than are actually grown.

That in Sochi at such soft climate, not the big specific variety of palm trees.

What I think would look good in Sochi are cold hardy Chamaedoreas like C. radicalis or C. microspadix

My flickr is OK now. Take a closer look to this "brand new palm trees" (for Sochi, of course). Your opinion is very importnat, 'cause I can't ID them due the lack of experience.

Vlad the little Livistona looks like an L. chinensis. L. rotundifolia is unfortunately too tropical to survive in Sochi.

No, Sochi's climate is extremly humid for Phoenix dactylifera.

This one looks like a sylvestris cross. With Phoenix I always say "looks like" because the majority of cultivated Phoenix are not purebred (except for P. dactylifera, where the pollination is monitored and controlled in most places). I think that both of these are mostly P. sylvestris, with the younger one in the latest photo possibly being a purebred.

It's time to sum up a list of the palm trees, that can grow in Sochi. Palm trees are sorted according their hardiness (starting from the hardest). A Species name is a link to it's photos (some photos may include different Species). Close Species and Hybrids that are hard to id within Genus share one photopage. Your help with list and zones would be greatly appreciated!

'?' means that I have no photo of this palm, but there are reports of it's the presence in Sochi.

'B' means that I have find this palm tree only in the botanical gardens of Sochi

As with everyone else here, the next winter Olympics will be very nice to watch with both ice skating and palms on display!

I live at 36 oN -- well south of you -- and cannot grow nearly so many palms (e.g., I got as low as -30 C in February). Envious!
