I found this palm at Jungle Music today and decided it looked different enough I was intrigued.

Any Ideas what it is?

A hybrid?

A mutant?

A fungus?

WHATEVER it is, I think it looks awesome! I dunno if it will stay that way, (I doubt it ) but I can hope. ;)

I noticed the old leaf was more pinnate, but It this palm has had trauma, It sure looks pretty good for it!!

Maybe pull out that little white tag in the pot and read it to us? :winkie: Really, I have no clue. My guess is it goes pinnate soon.

Interesting. Believe or not, I did not INTEND to leave out the palm name!

The Label was a Ptychosperma elegans....

Anyone know the cold hardiness?

And it sure looks like that schefferi

The weird part is that if you look at the lower leaf, it WAS pinnate...It went back to entire leafed...

They grow here, albeit very slowly. Chuck it in a warm spot with a dripper and forget about it for a couple of decades!

My guess is that it's a mutant form

Fingers crossed that it get even weirder

Hope those leaves stay entire-- That would be awesome!!!

Looks exactly like my P. schefferi did when it was younger, with the exception of one detail - I've never had the leaflets be as narrow, as they are on the older divided leaf. Maybe it's an elegans x schefferi hybrid.

Posted

Also I was just thinking that it looks like a P. lineare that I recently saw at a nursery that was about the same size

Posted

Looks like a Ptychosperma that I have. I'll try to get a picture up on here today of it. Mine does great in summer, but hates the winter. It spotted up real bad this winter, and then this spring it threw a couple of leaves like that and now it's back to normal, pinnate leaves.

Posted

Here's a picture of the palm I have. It's some sort of Ptychosperma, planted as a triple. I got this from a local place that didnt know what it was and it was in pretty bad shape. It grows fast, but burns really bad in the winter. I'm no expert, especially when it comes to Ptychosperma, so I'm not saying yours is the same as whatever mine is. Its just interesting about the leaflets not dividing which I just saw mine do for a season.

You'll see the largest of the 3 plants on the left has a large un-divided leaf. It's the second newest leaf to emerge.

Posted

Here's closer up on the backside of that leaf. I definitely think it was due to shock and coming out of the winter. Sorry the picture isn't great

Posted

And here's one more of the entire palm:

That's Dypsis Sp. Mayotte on the left of it.

Bill - Did it grow out of it or maintain its mutant form ?

This species is so prolific in South Florida, it has become naturalized. Interestingly with such an abundance, I've yet to see a variegated one. :interesting:

Hmmm, I never saw this thread. I'm pretty sure it's Ptychosperma elegans that got cold whacked and that triggers some weird entire leaf thing for a while. I had a large trunking one that did the same thing.

It probably has not been looked at in 16 days. Height of the growing season and it may not have the energy or hydration to open up the spear.

If it ain't dead, it will not celibrate another Christmas ... :bemused:

May be possible that Bill has not laid eyes on it since 8/15. :interesting:
