This one (Billbergia pyramidalis) has an exceptionally nice flower and grows great in my yard -- up close it looks just like a sea anenome:

Of course Billbergia pyramidalis is otherwise known as the "hurricane bromeliad." It has a short period of flowering, almost precisely when hurricanes are most likely. It's an old hand-me-down plant in Florida. A big bed can be impressive during its short period of glory. This bed's at Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Ft. Pierce.
