pic of my young Loxococcus rupicola.

Anyone have any pics of more established specimens growing?

I have two really lovely ones that put out purple new leaves. They were planted out from 5g pots and are growing well here in Kona. Unfortunately my husband took our camera to the mainland so I won't be able to post a picture until late next week.

Lee, I have one of those old Kodak Box Cameras you could use if you can find film for it! lol. Actually tho' I want to see those Loxococcus rupicola in person to see how easy it might be to dig one of them up to plant in our garden!

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Ben,

Here's one of ours. Not as big as George and Pedro's (fantastic!) It was planted from a 3g pot 11 months ago and had grown a foot. We love the purple new leaves.

Would love to know the original and current height's and years in the ground for George's and Pedro's - please.

Aloha Lee! Bought these as 5 gal size a year ago and put them in the ground last April. They were about this size when planted out but as you can see, they are throwing new spears nicely. - gmp

Where did you get them? I come over to Kona quite often, and would

love to bring a five gallon back. If any are still for sale . Hopefully I could get

it to pass thru the AG inspection??

Aloha Colin - A number of us got these from a nursery that has since closed. If Floribunda has some in the assembly line now, you might keep in contact with Jeff until he has some of the size that would be of interest to you. - gmp

I have a few larger ones that can be shipped.

So there you go Colin. If you can parlay this into a trip to the Hilo side and a visit to the Andersen garden, it will be like icing on the cake - wonderful place to visit - gmp

Thank you George for the info. Hopefully I can get one shipped or stop by

over there and get one. I would hope if they do well on the Kona side, they

should be ok for me also. I just have to irrigate during the dryer months.

thanks

Hey Lee,

Has the new leaf on yours always opened up that purple colour?

Mine tens to open with more of a cloudy blue/purple colouration like my Chambo sp. houailou, only the chambo holds its colour a lot longer.

For comparison, here's mine after six months in full sun. Compare with the original picture in the earlier post. Leaves smaller, shorter petioles, more bluish color. Looks good, but hardly rivals Karen and Dean's palm.

This has proved to be a really fast grower in open sun here in cloudy, rainy, humid, east Hawaii Island, and a very fast producer of HUGE quantities of viable seed. I can't even give them away anymore. This could become a very popular item for landscapers and big box stores in tropical regions. Of course, here, we don't have the climatic issues faced by growers in soCal or Florida.
