This is a very rare plant from the mountains of southern Mexico. It is believed to be extinct in the wild and after a freeze in the 90's that killed most of the known plants in cultivation it became a very difficult plant to obtain. It has an interesting story if you want to google it. It is a fast grower that blooms all winter and thrives in cool coastal conditions. I have three one gallon plants for sale $25 each (sorry no shipping). here are some pics of my plant just coming into bloom.IMG_1651.jpg

Curious, will it grow here in south Florida? I think it's a beautiful shrub and would love to see it in my garden someday if so.

Jeff,

From what I hear this plant needs very mild temps. It can't take frost and struggles with higher temps as well. It grows great for me on the coast and I hear it does well in San Francisco. It might be a tought grow for you, but since when has that stopped any of us. I hope to produce my own seed in the next year or so. If I do get some seeds I will send some your way.

Joe,

The plant in the ground is the Cristobal clone from San Marcos growers. The others are seed grown that I got from another plant collector.

One interesting thing is this plant is self steril. Since most of the plants in cultivation are from cuttings of only a few different plants, making most of the plants basically the same plant, there has been alot of difficulty producing seeds. A few people are finally getting two different clones and we are seeing some seeds now. I am hoping since I have some seed grown plants that I will be able to cross them with my Cristobal and produce seed.

All of the plants are now spoken for. I am happy to get this plant in the hands of other serious plant nuts. Thanks, Aaron

San Marcos is listing 3/ 5 gal. (landscape quality) Deppea splendens 'Cristóbal' in their October 2011 Availability List.

Here's their description of Deppea splendens. And here's the back story to this plant.

The Dennis I was referring to is Dennis Breedlove, who was mentioned in the back story for Deppea splendens. He has an amazing collection of rare plants.

I have not met Dennis, but if you know him I would not mind a tour of his yard :D For those who did not read the story Dennis is the one who discovered deppea and introduced it to cultivation.

I don't know Dennis personally, just buy his rare plants from him online.

I grow this plant too. I got it from Jeff in SF off Ebay. He's aka "Strange and Wonderful Things." It is mountaine meaing it won't like the east, too hot or too cold. I live across from SF in the Oakland Hills. My climate is suitable for fuschias and many other plants from the mountains but not coffee and most palms grow slowly here. I have some danger of frost but it is very, very rare. Temperatures of over 90F (35C) are only a couple of times a year and the nights cool off nicely.

I just harvested some seeds off of my plant. They are tiny seeds that germinate easily. If interested they are $10 for 25 seeds.
