Howdyall:

THIS NOTICE SUPERSEDES THE PREVIOUS NOTICE, WHICH WILL BE DELETED

November, 2011 Palm Society of Southern California Meeting.

Saturday: Tour two gardens, followed by lunch on the town, open PSSC meeting, and Auction/Raffle

Sunday: Visit Palm Canyon, the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, and much else

Saturday and Sunday, November 19 - 20, 2011

The Gardens of Don Nelson, and Alan Valley, both in Palm Desert

If you have never been to the desert, make it a point to come and visit, you'll be in for a treat! This is more than just that place you look down on as you're headed into your final approach at LAX. The Low Desert of Southern California is a special place, with year-round sunshine, clean air, abundant natural (and man-made) recreation and soaring mountains for a backdrop. As the coastal cool season brings summer fun to an end in San Diego and LA, the fun season is just starting in the desert. Come here to enjoy what's missing: traffic jams, overcast skies, and the endless city rat race.

It is quite surprising what will grow here. The desert almost never gets too cold for many of the tropicals you despair over further to the west, as long as they can stand the heat. Royals, for example, if given enough water, will reach perfection here, out of the wind. Coconuts are worth a shot, if reports by the Salton Sea are accurate. And, there are many palms that will thrive at their best in the desert and nowhere else: Hyaphaene, Borassus desert Livistonas and many more. Palm Canyon, near Palm Springs, is a natural grove of Washingtonia filifera that fill a canyon nestled at the base of the mountains, which is also the ancestral home of the Morongo band of the Cahuilla native American tribe.

Don Nelson Garden Address: 72845 Bursera Way, Palm Desert

Garden Phone: (760) 341-3434

This is a mature garden by a long-time Palm Society Member.

DIRECTIONS: Go east, on Freeway 10, when you get near Palm Desert, look for the Monterey (Hwy 74) exit; go right, or south. Keep going south, past Hwy 111 (the main drag of the desert) at which point it becomes Pines to Palms Hwy; about a mile after 111, look for Bursera; turn left onto it. The Nelson place is the fifth house on the right side of the street.

Alan Valley Garden Address: 73221 Pinyon Street, Palm Desert

Garden Phone: (760) 346-9251

This is another mature garden. Come and see what all those desert palms look like when they get big!

DIRECTIONS: Leave Nelson garden, go back to Pines to Palms (Hwy 74), go right (north), make a right on Shadow Mountain Drive, go around the long curve till you get to Ironwood Street, make a right on Ironwood, then make a left on Joshua Tree, then another right on Pinyon. Look for the Big Bad Bismarckia.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANY PHOENIX PALMS TO THE AUCTION. THEY ARE QUARANTINED IN THE COACHELLA VALLEY WHICH IS A COMMERCIAL DATE GROWING AREA.

LUNCH There are numerous eateries near the gardens. Eat, drink and be merry. Well, maybe not TOO merry . . .
