Kniphofia in Florida?

Does anyone have Kniphofia thriving in Florida? I have tried several kinds but they all seem to struggle and die. Just curious if anyone has been successful.

We can't grow them here either.....the summer rain and humidity takes care of that......I think that can survive out in the west of here. Maybe some selective breeding might be in order like what they have done with the Australian Kangaroo Paws.

Same here in Orlando, they just won't make it through the wet, humid summers.

Kniphofia grows like weeds here in the PNW. Have you tried K. rooperi its native to a summer rainfall area. Foliage is 4' tall and flowers are large. Blooms late summer. If you can't fine it you can always get them mail order from PNW nursery. I have some I am going to move late winter if you want a start? The foliage dies back if temps go below 18F, but it hardy. K. Glow is a smaller plant and evergreen here all year, blooms early spring.

Here's a pic of the young K. rooperi I am moving to put in some cordylines.

I have tried that one several times without luck. Plant Delights carries them and mentioned they grow in wetter, summer rainfall locations in habitat. But they still didn't make it here.

They're like weeds out here if you amend the soil with good fertilizer and give them water. Mine grew to 8ft tall (flowers) and can't stand by itself. I got tired of the yearly maintenance and pulled them up (mucho palm-like roots). I just put them to the side without planting and they're still growing but not as vigorously as before.

I took out all my large growing ones a few years ago, they just take up to much space in my small garden. Flowers are awesome like you said at least 8' tall.

My favorite just for foliage is K.northiae. Very wide/long Bluish green leaves that gives it a very succulent or aloe look. Grows a trunk like base around 6' tall.

I used to have around 25 types of Kniphofia but only Kept five varieties, I'll post some flower pics next spring.

Thanks for the information. I will try the rooperi. I am on a mission to find one variety that will thrive....
