Nice Terry.

We were just talking about this palm yesterday when somebody asked "ARE there any seeding large Dypsis in California" ?? I mentioned that palm right away... :D

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

"The great workman of nature is time."   ,  "Genius is nothing but a great aptitude for patience."

-George-Louis Leclerc de Buffon-

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Here's some pics of the mother Dypsis decipiens Terry has seed for. And I can vouch for the seeds viability. :winkie:

Aloha Robert ...

It was a small 1 Gal. when mom planted it in 1986 ...

Marty gave it to mom ... from the first batch he brought back from Madagascar ...

As far as i know ... it was the only one that made it from that batch.

It took 5-7 years before it really started taking off ...

Once it got going ... it stayed steady at it ...

It started seeding 3 years ago ...

i've given a few crops away to Jerry Anderson and a couple others ...

i decided to start selling them this year ...

i know the price is maybe high ... [ 20+ years to grow to get them ... ]

but it's a beauty and as i've been told ... the seeds are going to be hard to get from Madagascar now ...

and this one is maybe the easiest source ...

They germinate easily ...

We're actually mowing seedling from the seeds that have fallen into the grass below the tree.

and they just keep growing ... so they are hardy even when small ...

Aloha ... Terry

Ha ha! I swear I only picked up 2 seeds from the ground, but they both germinated. I also plucked one of the seedlings out and surprisingly it lived too even though I broke its root

No worries Matt ... i know how PalmNuts are ...

Here's a story from the late seventies or early eighties ...

The first visit for the S.C. palm society to Lotus Land in Santa Barbara ...

My mom had set up the trip with Madame Ganna Walska ...

My parents use to get her rare plants in the fifties\sixties ... [ rare for those days ]

When we had The Tropical Gardens Nursery ... [ 1954-1968 ]

Madame Ganna Walska use to send a box of champagne to my parents every xmas ...

Anyway ... i wanted to see the garden ... so i went up with a friend ...

We smoked a joint and walked around with a group of members[ 10-12 ] ... Observing ...

At one point one member saw a few tall palms a couple estates away from Lotusland ...

and so the group went out and over to that estate ...

Walking right into a backyard...

Then a few started running thru this estate's garden picking up seeds ...

It was quite a sight ... they were Sooooooo Highly Motivated ...

Then all of a sudden ... Out comes the Owner ... Yelling " what are you doing here ? "

Someone yells back ... " Were the Palm Society " ... like he would care ...

He yelled back something like " i don't care who the [ ... ] you are ... Get the [ .... ] off my property ...

of course ... Mike and i had a Good Laugh ... and we all went back to Lotusland ...

Being a child of two PalmNuts ... i've heard a few Good Stories of smuggling seeds ... also

My Sweet Innocent Looking Mother in a wheel chair ... wasn't that innocent ... :D when it came to getting seeds.

Aloha ... Terry
