Howdyall:

I sent out oodles of Archontophoenix seeds last year, and I'm curious to know what the germ rate was.

Let me know, go ahead and just post here.

One kind was the Happy Hurricane Hybrid, which is the King X Alexandrae cross; the other was A. tuckeri.

I sent seeds from Oz to Croatia, to Louisiana, to Kansas, to Indonesia to India, and many points between.

Really curious to know how it went for you!

best

A really discouraging old discussion. My A. tuckeri's are producing lots of seeds, though I think all three are siblings, so there might possibly be some problems if the plants aren't self-compatible. In any case, I'll be sending seed envelopes to several people.

In terms of harvesting, it seems easier to catch red seeds from the inflorescences rather than gather from the ground.

Has anyone had germination success?

A University of Florida bulletin cites Archontophoenix as benefitting from presoaking, but I think these seeds will have been sufficiently soaked by the recent rainy spell.

Yeah, lots of success. The seeds fall from my Archotophoenix and then they sprout by the hundreds underneath the palms from which they fell. It's got to be one of the easiest palm genus to grow from seed.

Since our local climate is fairly similar to southern Queensland, I think the seeds will go into envelopes this week and we'll see if they start germinating while the rainy season lasts.

I've got scads of Carpentaria seedlings, but of course they're from the Darwin area, different climate.

Since this is a germination thread and since Dave sent out another batch of A. tuckeri seeds, I have a question.

When you soak your seeds, does it matter what water you use? I had planned on using distilled, but if you don't have chlorinated water would tap water be okay? Will osmotic pressure from distilled water cause the seeds to pop? (am I overthinking this?)

My guess is you're overthinking yes. I had good results before with alexandrea seeds. They germinate very easily within weeks if fresh. But I believe they lose their viability quite fast.

Cluster, that's an exceedingly happy palm. A. cunninghamiana has a large range, including a range in elevation, so it's possible that different populations have different seed germination preferences. I do suspect that they mostly germinate pretty quickly after falling from the tree.

Okay.

Turns out the infamous Happy Hurricane Hybrid is a sterile Lothario; lots of seed, a germ rate of about 1% or less. It produces garbage cans full of seed that fall at the base and

and

nothing. Except a baby or two.

Sigh.

The new tuckeri, on the other hand, should be better. I have bees, buzz and multiple palms in bloom. I tested them, and all sank like stones. Maybe use them in place of buck-shot . . .

I recently received some Archantophoenix Cunninghamiana seeds from Pando and I'm planning to soak them for a couple of days and then put them in a mixture of peat moss and perlite.

Are these able to germinate at temperatures between 70-80F or do they usually require warmer temps?

I'm new to germinating... in fact I'm still waiting for my first Washingtonia Filiferas and Robustas to sprout which is embarrassing considering how they pop up everywhere in California

Posted

It's easier than falling off a log (go ahead, try that sometime!)

It's easier than  . . . .

Put the seeds in a pot big enough to hold them all in a single layer of nice potting soil (any commercial brand will do) about 3" deep. Spread out, more or less evenly, then cover lightly. Keep moist. Peat is a pain, if it gets dry it's the devil to wet again. I recommend potting soil instead.

(You don't need a red shoe, just there for scale.)

Dave,

Interesting that the Alex X King cross seeds you get off your specimen might? be sterile.. the supposed cross here, er, up in St. Pete at Kopsick dumps seed that i have had no issues germinating, and all i do is shell 'em. No soaking or anything before they go into com. pots. I do try to collect the freshest seed i can but thats it.

Well, this isn't the cross, this is the plant from the cross that's self-sterile, at least this one is.

Alas! So beautiful.

Ya know, i can't remember Dave. Will take a close look next time i'm up there. Had been tagged as an A X C cross but a lot of the signs in the park get vandalized and this was one of them. Doesn't look like any of the other Archontophoenix species in the collection there though.
