Steve, if you want a palm with a Bright Red Stem and is proven cold hardy..Prestoea Ensiformis...It has Entire Leaves as well...VERY Good looking palm, look out for it, seen them with both Red and Green stems, an exciting New Palm.. :) Pete

Steve, ours didnt flinch at a few 3c freezing mornings, their natural habitat elevation is 350 mtrs to just under 2000 mtrs,( Hendersons Palms of Sth Americas) good luck in finding a few, and if ordering from abroad, ask for the Reddest ones, RPS has seed as well.

Hi Steve,

I've tried Areca macrocalyx a couple times. The first one I got died in my unheated greenhouse. I tried again with two, and one of those made it through a couple winters in the same unheated greenhouse and grew very well. I planted it as a large 5g plant at my previous house which is in a very good microclimate (33F was the all time low in 2007, most years only have 1-2 nights under 40F). It was in a sheltered spot, in perfect soil, near a retaining wall and not too far from the house...a perfect spot. It was dead by sometime in January I think. It went from looking perfectly fine, to a pile of mush in less than a week. I don't think these have a chance here.

I have some Prestoea ensiformis seedlings right now. If anyone has any tips on growing these I'd love to hear them. Mine are the most horrible looking living palms I have. The leaves start browning before they've even fully emerged, and and the plants are just mottled brown, black and green. But they're alive and seem pretty well rooted. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, I just put them in a darker spot in the greenhouse to see if it's just too much light. It would be really cool if these will grow in SoCal, a very cool palm.

Does anyone know if it has the same cold hardiness as Areca catechu or Areca guppyana?

First is Areca trianda, next is Areca vestiaria, and then Areca catechu as far as the order of hardiest--cold tolerance wise. Areca macrocalyx is more sensitive than a lipstick, some say...

Well my palm is officially dead. It was growing fine until we had that cold spell that brought my greenhouse (non-heated) down to 40F. The leaves got spotted & it was downhill since. A 4 week death ..... Back to the drawing board. I do have an Areca triandra that I started from seed that is growing outside just fine. I'll try to post a picture today.
