Millions of people go to South Coast Plaza every year but how many of them pay atention to the palms. I know others have posted some pictures of the palms INSIDE the mall but none have shown the palms across the street. So here goes...

Lets look at the inside palms again.

Across the street you see this. And, when you do , start looking at the palms.

Do you know who planted those palms? Way too many rare palms to not be a palm collector.

Great coverage. Orange County is no San Diego when it comes to palm hot spots but South Coast plaza keeps us in the game. I used to work in the mall 11 years ago and am familiar with most of those palms. But some how I missed that jube! !! Is that off Sunflower?

The Livistona I forgot about. It is looking ab Fab for sure.

I was told that Ralph Velez consulted on the Palms planted at Crystal Court. There was even more in the past, but they were removed when the mall was remodeled.

It is on Sunflower. All of the outdoor palms I posted are right next to the corner of Sunflower and Bear.

Dalion and all,

One story I got was taht this Beverly Hills doctor had a palm collection

and when he died

He arranged for whoever planted them at CC to plant them there

Though I'm sure Ralph can name the names

and game the games

with no shame

or blame

or pain

Fabulous use of palms. Our malls on Maui use palms too, but very small selection, not much variety. Low maintenance is the major concern IMO. The Ala Moana Center on Oahu has a few clumps of Cyrtostachys renda in their water gardens.

Wow, that is impressive, Foxy ladies and regular Veitchias in the mall with Howeas and Caryotas, that is very special palm induced planting indeed.

Happy Gardening

The most impressive to me out of all those palms is the old man palm. That looks really old. Thanks for the photos.

That is the reason i have three C. crinitas. I figured if a shopping mall near me could grow it I could too.

A friend found this "Self Guided Tour to the Crystal Court Palm Collection" brochure. I hadn't seen it before and, given how old it is, I'm not sure how accurate it is. But it's a pretty cool resource and it should be here.

Last time I asked someone who works at SCP if they had anything like this, they thought I was crazy. :mrlooney:

Wow a mall my wife could actually talk me in to going to. At least the parking lot anyways.

Ralph Velez was in charge of finding palms to plant. Ralph got many palms for me as well as several growers at the time. Many years ago!

That's not a shopping mall but a Botanical gardens! Seriously impressive.

Very impressive collection. Assuming the Red Lantan listed in the brochure is indoors.. if it is still there?

I hope that at least some mallgoers would notice that they're in a wonderland.

Most commercial and institutional plantings disappoint. It's rare to see something different.

I thought about doing a quick trip to southern California earlier this month--Southwest had good fares and a substantial Southern Ocean swell was predicted well in advance, so I could have enjoyed the spectacle at Newport Beach. The mall, assuming I have the right one on the map, near Segerstrom Center, would have been reasonably easy to find. Of course I haven't trained for urban driving lately. Orlando, no Miami.
