Sabal mauritiiformis

After reading Moose Knuckles post on his Sabal Domingensis, i decided to take a stroll and have a look at some of that genus i have.........It didn't take long for me to pick a real stunner. One of my favorite palms is Sabal mauritiiformis....i have had mine growing in a lot of shade which i think enhances the Licuala-like leaf architecture.

My Maurit isnt that big (carbonated beverage bottle for scale), but it grows steady with enough water and fert.

If you are are growing this palm, please share some pics, would love to see 'em!

Rusty, that's a beauty! I have a few that I germinated from seed a few years ago and they are currently in 5 gallon pots. I hope to plant a couple of them this May/June when the rainy season is in full swing.

Here's a photo of some S. mauritiiformis that I took here in Costa Rica. They are lining the entrance to a hotel and are planted very close together.

Rusty, this has to be the most beautiful Sabal. Your is looking great. This one is in my garden, growing in shade. Seems they look great, stretched out, with large silver undersides of the leaves. Stop by the CFPACS tour in March & have a look.

Mike's looks even better & more impressive in person.

Here's mine, It's been in the ground for three winter now, so it is quite cold hardy (under cover)having been through 18deg. three years ago, 24deg. last year & 28deg. this year (so far). Lighting in my back yard kinda sucks in the afternoon, so these are the best I could get. It's going to be competing with a palmetto I planted right behind it, which should make it stretch out even more when it grows up.

I have a few Sabal mauritiiformis growing in 5 inch pots. It is hard to find info about them.

What size should they be before planting in the garden in full sun?

I have one Sabal mauritiiformis that I bought as a one gallon size in January of 2002. It's been a slow grower.

Because I thought it lacked cold hardiness I pot grew it for many years and would move it into my heated greenhouse on freezing, frosty nights. About 5-6 years ago I planted it in a more sheltered area of my property where it got some overhead canopy from a close growing Carolina cherry laurel.

To my surprise, and delight, it's gone through every winter without cold damage, other than what always seems to be winter time potassium deficiency on its oldest fronds. But by summer's end these yellowing fronds have been replaced.

I have two small Sabal yapa that are similar (to me, anyway) to Sabal mauritiiformis. I grew these from seed and they are painfully slow to grow. One palm (shown below) is planted back in a lightly wooded area of my property where it gets slightly less cold and much less frost. The other palm is more in the open and gets frost/cold damage most winters; this past winter was an exception.

After seeing Mike Evans palm this past weekend at the CFPACS meeting I gotta say it is better looking in person than in photos!

Remember this thread I started last year? I have to determine if I want to keep my S.mauritiformis in its current location as it looks like it will grow tall and wide.

This is the Sabal mauritiiformis in the Garden at Wakiu with fruit. It's a little taller now and I believe I saw more fruit on it.

Here is my sabal mauritiiformis I got from Ken Johnson. It is a slow grower and at this point Im fine with that. When they get tall it wont be possible to see into the crown. This is one of the palms that the non palm gardeners ask about, its a very tropical looking palm. When I first planted it, my yard wasn't grown in and wind damaged some fronds. Now that it is grown in, the wind doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. this one is in part sun with a maple to its east, and a magnolia to its northeast giving some shade and the house screens western sun... at least for now at this height.

I haven't noticed much change in growth of my Sabal mauritiiformis over the past several years. I bought this palm as a one gallon size in January of 2002. No emerging trunk as of yet. My palm undoubtably gets too much shade. I planted it in a protected spot because I was doubtful of its cold and frost hardiness. Had my palm been in full sun it probably would have grown more, although the fronds might have been shorter. In any event, it is what it is.

I have three small Sabal yapa in the ground. The one below is the larger of the two. I have two 7 gallon S. yapa I plan to plant in the spring of 2014.

Bump! Here's my magnificent S. mauritiiformis :floor: 1 year in the ground from fairly small seedling. I started with 3 but 2 were planted in full sun & failed to thrive then died. This one gets filtered light. I've neglected it for the year it's been in the ground but I added fertilizer & mulch this past weekend never to be neglected again though it will eventually shade out my 2 banana mats - meh.
