Hi Zafliran where about are you in Malaysia? Its so nice having the Asian members numbers boosted by your appearance.

I bought Geonoma "mooreana" seed recently as I also liked the look of that elegant little palm a lot. Im not sure of its exact habit, if its upright or completely lax but it has a very thin trunk by the looks of it however with lovely fine feathery foliage.

Unfortunately the seed I bought on the internet was dud (blanks, shot, unviable). On close inspection on arrival of the small seed I found mostly empty crusty shells or a black chalky/woody substance in there.

I would love to get jet fresh seed of this and as I never got a replacement for the rotten seed will keep looking out for sure. Where are you thinking of getting your seed from? If only one could tell how old seed was at time of ordering especially for such little vulnerable seed I might not have bothered.

Look forward to seeing your palms the "ruffled fan palm" is an exciting mystery.

Welcome Ali, I can't comment on this species but have grown a few Geonomas in chilly and wet NZ. Here they seem to require particularly good drainage but resent drying out. In your favoured climate they may turn out to be any easy grow!

cheers

This palm is infected with white spider mites at the base of the trunk. The trunk is getting hollow too.Is there anything i can do about it?I tried the soap spray yet nothing happened.

Advice is appreciated.

Cheers!

Zafliran I cant see the close up of the trunk as when I click on your pic thumb it doesn't appear? Odd.

Anyway its unlikely to be spider mite causing the trunk to become hollow or actually infecting the base of the trunk, spider mites like and damage the underside mostly of leaves. What you are seeing might be dead and living bodies, excrete, eggs or webs of the mites, general associated debris of the mite on the base and trunk. Are there any large holes or rot anywhere, you might have a rhino beetle or weevil species etc causing the hollowing? Put your ear to the trunk and listen you can often hear them.

My seed didn't come from e-bay so you might have luck. Could I have a link to them? I didnt think anyone else had....

I brought seed of these in june 2010 and germination was good and are still germinating but always damp. They are slow here .Seed was from Tobypost-109-098279600 1329433480_thumb.jpg

Gary your seed is still germinating 2years later??? Thats remarkable for such little seed. I also bought from RPS, Areca vestiaria (red crown clumping) seed I've just thrown away as they arrived full of "ex-promise" some even having had germinated unfortunately all shoots were rubbery and yellow and fell out. Im begining to think unless your instructions for the delivery of seed are actualy read it will always be a dissaster. But it seems with rareplmseeds is that they dont have the staff to read e-mails other than the initial order.

I know the viability of vestiaria is extremely short so I asked for federal express, that is express me the seed the minute its freshest and available at my expens but instead I got a a batch of pregerminated seed which is even worse than slightly older seed as the viability is even shorter when they are already germinating out of any media.

How do others feel about pre-germinated seed in general because I have had terrible seed sent to me in this state and with absolutely no return emails on my complaints. I would prefer seed at its prime but not germinated as its too vulnerable to be shipped long distance in this state.

Some rather lovley seed I recieved last week pictured, sent the pics not a word 2weeks later, same problem with an older order before still no word on those four months later. I phoned a few times but it didnt help, all very friendly but 0 customer service. Was told the e-mails went missing their end. Re-sent all the correspondance ......nothing.
