Meathead: he's looking for 5 gallon or larger - similarly sized as the ones you killed from Matty B; thanks for trying, I guess

I get by with a little help from my fronds

Don't waste your time trying to find a 5 gallon or larger Eucalyptus deglupta. Like most Eucs, they are much better to plant out from a 1 gallon. They are very difficult to grow in pots, as apparently Dave and Danny have found out. I packed my pots with as heavy clay as I could find to try and keep them from drying out and dying. That's the only way I could grow them in 5 gallon pots. My neighbor planted his 1 gallon out and in a few weeks his were bigger than my 5 gallon pots.

Not only are they very sensitive to drying out in pots, they seem to feel the bottom of the pots and stop growing. As soon as you pot them up or plant them out they start growing again.

So much for your vaunted persuasive powers. Those 2-gallons will be 5-gallons or larger very quickly, as Matt pointed out AND AS YOU KNOW.

DZ:

Take smaller plants, and plant them in the ground right away. I had some that rooted in the ground in pots, and they got to be 6 feet tall and about two-three inches thick in a couple of months (complete with rainbows on teh trunks). They are among the fastest plants I've ever grown. And, as Matt pointed out they need lots of water, or they'll dry out and croak. If you put them in large pots and keep them watered enough, they'll outgrow them fast, especially if they can root in the ground.

Thanks for all the info guys, appreciate it. If anyone has any 1 or 2 gallon material they would be willing to sell let me know. Thanks again for all the help.

sounds like Danny(palmazon) still has some, and he's in the OC. I have another batch coming along but they won't be ready to sell for a month or so.

Danny does.

They were at my place for a long while, and survived my, er, husbandry (wifery?). If you give them even halfway decent care, they'll take off like rockets, without the vapor trails.

So, DZ, are you a member of the PSSC? Even if you aren't, how about coming to the PSSC meeting this coming Saturday? It's going to be at Ralph Velez's place and Larry Black's place. Larry's garden is a real jewel in a small spot. And, it's in the OC, close to you. Ralph's is, well, thoroughly Velezed and has to be seen to be believed.

And, there'll be free potluck food, including the infamous Gulash and/or Palm Society Stew. Followed by an auction. And schmoozing up the wazoo . . . .

Another Shamless Plug of the PSSC .

Everytime i mean to check into I forget or get busy. Anyways, that sounds like a good time and Ralph's house is the stuff of legends. I have never checked it out so this weekend might be a good chance. thanks for the heads up.

Ah, Shameless Plugs sometimes do work!

Shoot me a PM with your information, including e-mail and phone, and I can find out if you're on the list, and what the situation is.

Also, if you want some degluptas, I might be able to play delivery guy to you at the meeting with some of Danny's plants.

And, looking forward to meeting you!

So the migration of these Eucs is: some distributor in habitat New Guinea, John in Andalucia Spain, MattyB in Spring Valley CA, Dave in La Habra CA, Danny in Torrance CA, to Dr. Zoidberg in Costa Mesa CA. Interesting story how plants get around the world.
