Eric in Orlando

Recommended Posts

Our White Shower Tree, Cassia x nealiae 'Queen's Hospital White' is flowering for the first time. It has grown to about 15ft tall. The unopened flower buds have a pink blush to them but open pure white.

Really nice Eric-any trouble with the cold? Wonder if it could make it here in Socal?

Hi Eric,

how long has it taken to flower for the first time?

Great pictures.

Raymond

It was a small. 3gal specimen, planted in Aug. 2008. It grew very slow for the first year, got knocked back after the cold winter of 2009-10, recovered slow in 2010 then growth exploded summer 2011.

Hardiness seems very similar to Delonix regia but more sensitive to long coo/cold spells. Ours suffered moderate damage after the 2009-10 winter.

Is this in the white garden?

Is the Lagerstroemia speciosa 'Alba' still hanging on?

SoCal and SoFla; zone varies by location.

Peter:

There's some growing in southern California. It's too bad it's not tried or grown more often.

I drove by the large Cassia fistula (which I posted last summer in City Heights), it had lots of leaves on it. What's so strange is I never noticed the 30ft/9m tall tamarind tree on the same property.

I should grow a Queen's White Shower tree here in San Diego...maybe I'll have good luck, as I was born in Queen's Hospital in Honolulu, HI.

This tree isn't as hardy as C. fistula. I wouldn't try to discourage someone from trying to grow it on a south-facing slope with perfect air and water drainage, but I wouldn't recommend it for most people either. Plants are typically airlayered or grafted, and are pricey. If you've got a good C. fistula and/or a blooming Delonix regia in SoCal, then, be my guest.

Yes, it has been a weird grower, hasn't wanted to grow a main leader yet so it is staked up.
