Picked these up last Thursday, put them in the ground today, where winter sun shines for them.

The first Veitchia joannis I planted near the fence, gets a nice dollop of sun in this spot most of the day (except early morning)

Do you use the hay to hold warmth or stop the growth of weeds?

Hi Alex, that is in fact sugar cane mulch around the Veitchias and hay around the Thrinax, and yes I use it for those reasons you wrote plus it cools the roots in hot weather and breaks down for soil nutrients, puts the worms into action. I use it when developing the palm garden, once they are more established I will switch to a longer lasting better looking mulch.

Thanks for enquiring.

Wal nice palms ! I plant all year, seems I kill as many in the summer as I do the winter, so I think it's me not the season.
