The Palm Society of Southern California’s July, 2012 meeting will be held at the gardens of Greg Asbagh and Dean Ouer, in Encinitas, northern San Diego County, California on July 21, 2012.

PSSC meeting, tours, potluck lunch, and Auction/Raffle

Saturday July 21, 2012

ADDRESS: 817 Wood Dr., Encinitas, CA 92024 For about thirteen years, Greg and Maria Asbagh have put tremendous efforts into creating a garden paradise. It has been featured in garden magazines, books, television shows and is sought after for tours by nonprofit groups. It features unusual palm and cycad species as well as multiple decks, water features, a golf green and rare subtropical plants from around the world. There are unusual Roystonea, Veitchia, Dypsis, and New Caledonian species at every turn of the curved pathways. Greg continually adds new species. You won't be disappointed with this very aesthetic garden. Parking is limited.

There will be a PSSC Board Meeting at 9:30 a.m. – if you’re a PSSC member, attend if you like. Participation is always encouraged.

ADDRESS: 445 Naiad St, Encinitas, CA 92024 This garden is just a few minute drive from the first garden. Many of you know DypsisDean from PalmTalk. He started his rather large garden over 25 years ago. At the time he was particularly interested in many of the newly available Madagascar species. The palms and canopy trees that survived are now mature and established. Featured are rare species of Ravenea, Dypsis, and New Caledonia species, as well as unusual New World palms. Dean moved to Hawaii ten years ago, and until recently the constant care and new plantings became a thing of the past. Dean's son Dorian has now taken an interest in restoring the garden, and will be our host. If you like older rare palms, this garden is for you. The potluck will be at this garden.

After the garden tour, we will have a potluck lunch at 11:30, followed by a short PSSC General Meeting at about 1:00 p.m. – if you’re a PSSC member, attend if you like. Participation is always encouraged.

Fried Chicken will be provided for the main course in the lunch. Please bring your favorite dish to share with us. Not sure what to bring? Bring what you like --- if you like it, odds are the rest of us will, too. Iff you hate to cook, it's okay to buy something. Salad, pasta, dessert, bring what you like. If in doubt, bring it on out!

The general meeting will be followed by the auction and raffle. The meeting will adjourn at the end of the auction between 3 and 4:00 p.m.

Anyone is welcome to donate plants for the auction. Palms are preferred, but we'll auction cycads and any other nifty plant you bring. Minimum donation on plant sales is 50% to the PSSC (with 50% to the donor), but you can donate more if you like. We will auction any plant you bring, but, please avoid very common plants and/or extremely large ones. The best sizes are in 1 - 5 gallon pots. We hope you also bring lots of money to bid on plants!

SATURDAY ITINERARY

- PSSC Board meeting, 9:30 a.m.

- View the Asbagh Garden in all its glory, 10:30 a.m.

- Roar off to Dean Ouer's garden 11:45

- Potluck Lunch Begins 12:30

- General Meeting and Plant Sale, 2:15 p.m.

For the plant auction, rare species preferred, in pot sizes that are easy to carry, preferably no larger than 5 gallon size.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

There is plenty of parking on adjacent streets if you get creative, and don't mind a short easy stroll.
