Here are some palmy shots from my recent trip to Southeast Asia. First up, an interesting fan palm that was all over Ujong Kulon National Park in southwest Java.

Also in Ujong Kulon, some sort of Calamus perhaps???

BTW, sorry in advance for all the posts with just 1-2 pictures, but the new procedure for adding photos to posts is far less user friendly than before, and it's too hard to see what I'm posting (or about to post) with multiple photos.

Anyway, here is Nypa fruticans:

Now onto a canoe trip through a mangrove tributary that had plenty of palms.

Not sure what this is (was), since it flowered and then croaked. But it was impressive nonetheless:

Hodgepodge of a variety of palms growing right next to one another:

Not sure what this is - any ideas?

Still in the mangrove swamp...

I'm not very good with the fan palms, but maybe some sort of Licuala??

Another hodgepodge, including a Caryota:

Same:

Some very tall...something. I think Oenocarpus, but it wasn't like I could get out of the canoe to check for spines:

Nice Justin. The palms in the first pic look like Corypha and the last pic in Post # 7 look like Oncosperma tigillarium.

Thanks for the pics.

Yes, Oncosperma. I always mix up that and Oenocarpus, probably because they both start with O. Thanks for the clarification.

B) I do my fair share of mixing things up as well.

It looks like you had a great time and saw lots of very nice palms in habitat. The last picture in #5, looks like Areca catechu, the Betel Nut palm.

Sure did! And this is just from the first 48 hours of a three week holiday. More to come tomorrow.

And now to the Bogor Botanic Garden. Interestingly, there were few to no palms from Madagascar, which I found odd. The garden is very old, and I'm sure when the palms were first planted, there were very few (or no) sources for Malagasy palms, but I didn't even see any juvenile to middle-aged palms from Madagascar. Anyway, without further adieu,

Clump of something-or-other, almost looks like a Phoenix:

Not sure what this is, but I like the way the leaves droop:

IMG_0005s.jpg

This was labeled as an Areca spp., but I don't recognize it. The leaves were plumose, like a Wodyetia.

Oenacarpus panamanus: (from Panama)

IMG_0063s.jpg

No label on this one, but maybe Kerriodoxa?

Nephrosperma vanhouttesanum (from Seychelles) - I've never seen or heard of this one before.

Copernicia alba, which looked awesome, and would look even better without all the yellow tips:

Roystonea elata. Reminded me of the paths at the botanic garden in Rio de Janeiro.

IMG_0085s.jpg

Elaeis guineensis. Unfortunately, I saw WAAAAAAAYYYY too many of these in other parts of Indonesia and Malaysia.
