I'm about to plant a Hyophorbe indica (red) and was wondering where to plant it. I haven't had any frost, am south facing with great air drainage. I've had a small Hyophorbe verschaffeltii for 2 years now planted from a liner that hasn't had any leaf damage so I figured the indica would be ok.

How wind tolerant are these?

Full sun? At what age?

Also feel free to post any of yours!

Hey Jastin,

I've heard that the red form & the green form are basically identical. I have a doulble planting of each. The red form is in a smallish planter in the front; part day coastal sun. It is the about the sickliest palm I have. Doesn't look good at all. Since this has been a great summer, this is a bad time to look bad. The green form is in back, gets more sun & looks wonderful. Not sure if it's because of differences in them, or if it's merely where they were planted. I think you'll have better luck with less sun; not sure about wind tolerance.

I have the Red form ( which is now green) planted in partial morning Sun, and a little afternnon sun ( total maybe 3 hours), its never missed a beat and is fruiting after 5 years from a JM 3 gallon. They don't seem to do well in the wind.

Aloha!

Cardiff,

Hyophorbe indica has been problem free for me and I now have one 12 feet tall overall and in flower for the first time. Mine is in part shade and looks great, maybe just a tad yellow. It was the red form but they lose that when they get older. Have another one in deeper shade and it is doing fine. THESE ARE FAST.

Here is the thread showing mine;

That's a great looking palm, I have mine in full morning and some midday sun then it is shaded for the rest of the day, it is going great. Pic later.

Yow, Patrick you must be a magician!

I haven't been able to get that kind of growth from an H. indica.

I've got three in the ground, and I've found they can be a bit touchy about too much sun if you don't acclimate them well.

Jastin, if your plant has been in the sun all along, you can give it sun. I've found they seem to be happier in some shade, though. I've got two forming trunk that are nice enough, but nothing like Patrick's.

Here she blows, getting along nicely. It had some size when I bought it though. I don't have any idea on whether it is supposed to be red or green, but there's a lot of reddish brown going on there.

Thanks for the pics Wal, Looks great.

Patrick, I searched before I posted and did look over your thread, yours is beautiful. How much sun does it get?

The guy I got it from has his planted next to a spindle and a bottle palm, and next to a larger coconut palm. His gets full blasting sun all day, along with the radiant heat from it being planted next to his house. He lives 1-2 miles from the beach and insisted on planting in full sun, says that thats the only way it will look good. Since I get 5-10 degrees hotter than him I didn't know if it could handle it. his looks perfect like yours.
