Howdyall:

It's that time again, and we're having our meeting in Orange County, the OC at two adjacent cheek-by-jowl gardens.

The Palm Society of Southern California will be holding its November, 2012 meeting at the homes of John Boyer and Guy Young. They are next-door neighbors sharing a “friendly gate” at 21561 and 21551 Archer Cir., Huntington Beach, CA 92646 respectively.

Please enter through John’s front door and continue straight through to the back yard.

John decided in the mid-1990's, after a trip to Hawaii, that tropical landscape was what he wanted for his yard. In the meantime Guy, after visiting a palm specialist nursery, found a way to expand his relatively new, but “boring” King, Queen, and Pygmy plantings.

It was the year 1997 that for Christmas, Guy purchased a membership into the PSSC for John. The competition collecting “the best” rare palms began! John says he has won and Guy agrees…but teases that it is only a temporary condition. They often joke that they justify their palm addiction expense to their wives by buying each other a palm(s) for Christmas and birthdays. Both gardens combined display over well over 100 species of palms. There are many species of Ravanea, Dypsis, Chamaedorea, and Chambeyronia along with beautiful specimens of Burretiokentia, Clinostigma, and a Hedyscepe that tops them all.

Their gardens combined include a small swimming pool, a koi pond, a stream or two, and a beautiful garden house, all accompanied by other tropical plants, ti and bromeliads in particular. Much has changed and matured in these gardens since our last visit over 5 years ago, so please join us!

Don't forget to bring your favorite dish for the potluck and finally show off that world famous recipe you have always bragged about. Fried chicken will be complimentary and beverages will be sold for the price of one dollar. There will also be a Palm auction. Please do not bring palms over the size of 5 gallon and rare or uncommon species are most definitely preferred. Minimum donation for plant sales is 50% to the PSSC, but you may donate more if you wish to do so.

I plan on being there.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.
