My mom doesn't post here and she wanted me to show you the palm she's growing. She said it still has some green on it so it's probably still alive. :bemused:

That looks a LOT like the stuff I "grow"!

Your Mom sounds like someone who sees the "cup as half full" which is admirable. I also try for realistic optimism. Maybe you could sneak in a new palm and claim a Christmas miracle?

My Mom enjoys any opportunity to tell me "I told you so" and "Mother knows best". However, maybe it would give her the encouragement to treat the new palm exactly the same way, which we might not want to teach. You are right, since we are supposed to like palms on this forum.

I must admit, I currently have in my greenhouse a palm that is totally brown (and dead) that I didn't toss yesterday. It's a Johannesteijsmannia lanceolata that I got in California this summer and really wanted to live to complete my mini Joey species collection. Today I haven't gone into my greenhouse yet, partly because I know it will STILL be dead and I'll have to face facts and toss it and move on. So I'm in more denial than your mother!

Sorry, I see I'm extending the off topic responses. Feel free to remove this post if you want to get back to asking for new members to post photos.

After five months in the ground it has succumbed suddenly and unexpectedly. :crying:

Harry, your palm is too young to be outplanted. Have you spayed it with insecticide in the past?

It looks dried out. I would water it throughly and put on a sunny place.

Reinhardtia paiewonskiana in my cold frame, waiting yet to become substantially root bound for outplanting. It has suffered a lot during the recent past years due to my mistakes and the very hot and prolonged summer. It gets though better.

Matty,

Why did you give your Mom a "Beaumont Palm" to try and grow. Might I suggest some San Diego Palms? I keep hearing that those are much better.

I grew up in a z5 city. I know what those Great Plains winters are like. This has to be about the most amazing feat of gardening I have ever seen. More pics! More pics!!!

How do you pull this off? Is your stuff actually in the ground? Are they in pots and buried seasonally? What do you do?

Thanks for you kind words...the column cactus are pot planted along with the Madagascar palm.

Also, the A.americana is dug up every year,I contemplated leaving it in this year but I may be maxed out right now.

Everything else is in the ground-of course the Bananas are stored inside every winter.

Starting out April 2008

I painted the house too.

NOTICE THE GREEN GRASS HERE-not just cold you deal with here but wild extremes..

Almost 70" of rain May-Sept one year and only 11" in the same period in another year.

This is what I did to cover them, pretty big waste of electricity!-LOL

I have refined this since and need to continue to do so as the power is pretty much maxed out.

Waste cont......look at all the air I was heating!

It was fun to sit in there though.

Amazingly-the only palms that are covered as of Dec 4 are the Washy,Butia Eriospatha and baby Takil which has pulled 2 years in a row now.

Final word-

As bad as the winter can be,the fall is the time when the most damage occurs as they have missed

on the low temp forecast by as much as 10F!

Happened last year and killed all the T.ferns but the D.Antarctica.........

and again this year twice!The

worst of it was the low temp was forecast as 18F the actual was 8F!

This caused most of the smaller palms to spear-pull but the 3 biggest palms were unfazed

and actually were growing as the temp hit 70F here yesterday-Zombie zone
