I'd never heard of this species either, but accoring to the "World Checklist of Palms," it is a valid species that grows in the Bismarck Archipelago in Papua New Guinea. It reminds me a bit of an even more delicate A. guppyana.

Maybe these trees are not Areca novohibernica, but I don't think they would be A. guppyana if you look at the seeds and flowers.

What do you think?

Philippe, this A. novohibernica has been in the ground for about 18 months and so far so good. Similar to A. guppyana, but seems to hold more leaves and more pinnae on the leaf. Very similar though.

Kew lists A. guppyana as a synonym of A. novohibernica. I have a dozen of these germinating now. :greenthumb:

Interesting, I've grown them both and they look entirely different. Of course things can get mislabeled, but my A. novohibernica came from a reputable grower.

Tim,

I agree with you,

I saw A guppyana (in Samarakoon's garden) different from A. novo-hibernica (in Singapore B.G.)

I feel disturbed by Kew telling theses 2 names are synonyms.

What to do?

Interesting...I've only seen photos and can't really discern any difference. As you no doubt know, some species can be quite variable. I believe that prior to DNA analysis, differences in flower structure determined species separation, that I think that's held up quite well even with DNA analysis. I what ways did yours differ?
