Yep - there is a Mango variety called: Tebow

Named for Heisman Trophy winner and Florida Gator quarterback Tim Tebow, this hybrid located at the University of Florida Tropical Research and Education Center is a real champion. Like the dual virtues of Tim’s running and passing game, the Tebow Mango has the venerable virtues of both quality and production. By crossing an Edward with a Kent in 1972 David Sturrock of West Palm Beach, Florida developed a fruit that has the production qualities of the Kent and the incredible eating qualities of the Edward. The fruit was originally dubbed the Young, and most likely went unnoticed for decades simply because of it's yellow skin which was undesirable to commercial growers. Born on a large tree the fruit is yellow and pink when ripe, completely fiberless, and weigh about one pound each. It is a mid to late season bearer ripening from mid July to August.

This description was copied from the Palm Island Nursery site. They are the same nursery which provides Fairchild Tropical Botanial Garden with all the Mango Trees for sale at their Mango Festival.

Sooo, does it fails to bear fruit when conditions aren't perfect like Tebow?

because of it's yellow thin skin which was undesirable to commercial growers professional teams.

__________

Hopefully it's a better producer than it's namesake...

SoCal and SoFla; zone varies by location.

This is interesting. The Tebow Mango, thin skinned and not capable of professional production! Well maybe both have not been given an appropriate chance to perform. One short story on Tebow: As a seventeen (17) year old early enrollee at UF, during Winter, he lifted with the Offensive Line. He bulked up a bit to 6'3/255 during weight training prior to Spring ball. As is the case at the end of lifting and mat drills, the team conducts it's annual lifting test. This is a competition that includes the Bench Press and how many times a player can bench 225lb's. One of the Offensive Lineman, who was a senior NFL prospect, was the leader at the time Tebow's turn arrived with thirty three (33) benches of the 225lb weight. Tebow quickly popped out 30 benches and was headed way beyond. The team's trainer quickly moved to Tebow, who was now at 32 benches. He whispered into Tebow's ear: "never outlift the leader of your Offensive Line". The seventeen (17) year old halted immediately.

To the extent it is necessary to put down the mango or Tebow, all is fair play these days. That stated, should you need a soldier to watch your back, Tebow may not be a bad choice. The Sturrock I knew was Jim and he was ther owner of a prominent landscape business in our area.I am uncertain if there is any family relation between he and David. Sounds like a great mango.

Bubba - I am curious why no one has switched Tebow to the Tight End position. Get him the ball and let him do what he does best. Just the threat of Tebow stepping back and getting a screen pass and then throwing down the field would make the defense have to play up tight on him every play. I'm not a Tebow fan because I am a Cane however, the Jets are not taking advantage of his athletic talents.

Moose, Agreed. Maybe even Middle Linebacker. Allowing a stud-duck like this kid to ride the pine is a waste. Will try the mango and still curious about Sturrock.

u dont just throw a lifelong qb in as a tight end or linebacker even if he's a freak in the weight room- ive never seen him catch a ball or tackle anyone for that matter

I've seen him take long snaps. As a lifelong quarterback - it probably means that he was very the best athelete on any team he played on until the pros. I guess throwing him on the bench with his atheletic skills in his prime is what is appropriate :bemused:

I agree hes under utilized - especially with the team hes currently on - I was just pointing out that very few players make a transition to another position in the NFL and its usually not qbs- Brad Smith is one of those transition guys but i cant think of to many more - didnt want to hijack this thread - hopefully one day ill get to try the tebow mango

Often the fruit with the most undesirable-looking skin contain the most desirable traits on the inside ^_^
