I have tried many, many times to germinate Papaya, with no luck - even fresh out of the fruit - If you can help me along with the process, then I'd love to try these.

Nice.Cold hardy to 31°,does that mean no damage at all?

I've germinated many Papaya and they are very easy to germinate. Since there's always a lot of fresh fruit around the seeds when I put them in the pot, I make sure and water them alot, so as to leech all those sugars out, to prevent rot. Other than that, they seem to pop up pretty quickly with no special care.

How deep do you plant them?

I do not plant them with any fruit around them - unless if I'm missing a step - I plant the round black seeds - unless if they have a covering that is inhibiting growth?

Do they need light to germinate?

Posted

I put them about 1"-2" in regular old potting soil. Yes, the black seeds, just bury them in some dirt and keep it warm. I scoop the seeds out of the fruit, so that's why they're all slimey and have fruit all around them.

Matty, they are only a little sweet, very large and almost round, and only a hint of that funny Papaya taste that a lot of people don't like, and when nice and ripe cut em into bit size squares, and they're better with the skin on than without, Ed

Dražen, No they will lose most of their leaves, and if it's for more than a few hours will freeze back a bit, but will come right back in the spring, Ed
