Recommended Posts

I am looking for reasonably priced horticultural grade pumice in sizes suitable for potting mixes for cycads. If anyone is aware of its availablity in the Modesto-Fresno area please let me know.

Also, I may be in Orange County this upcoming weekend- please let me know if you know of its availability there.

Thank you :)

I get mine from orange county farm supply. It's off the 57 and chapman in the city of orange. I don't remember the price or weight but they come in big white bags.

Hi Glenn,

Not aware of any bulk supplier in the valley, but there is a place in San Jose that you can purchase by the yard. I can try and dig that up if you are interested.

If you need smaller quantities, check out your local AG Supply shops for a product called Dry Stall. They use it for horse stalls (and other uses). Last fall it was around $8 for a forty (or fifty) pound bag. That is about the same volume as a fluffed up bag of mulch. For my high drainage cacti/succulents I mix two bags of Patio Plus and one bag of Dry Stall. Should probably be a decent mix for Cycads.

If you can't find it locally, PM me for a supplier in my area.

BTW, last time I checked Tractor Supply had no clue what Dry Stall was. Check your local "independent" AG supply stores.

Dry stall is maybe 1/8" average size. Thanks for the link for more chunky stuff.

Thanks everyone this sounds great. I definitely like the chunky bigger sizes, even better in mixed sizes.

I get mine from Morgan's in Antioch $65/yard, $6.75 for a 2 cuft bag.

Next NCPS meeting I can bring you a bag or 2 if you want. (red or black)?

Not sure if they have it all the time, but last year I purchased a yard from WC Wood Industries in Visalia.  I think it was about $80/yd which is a bit pricey, but it is cheaper than driving to the bay area to get some.  They are right of HWY 99, so an easy stop if you are heading down to LA.  Size is about 1/8".
