Hi all,

I may have a problem with my potted lemur palm???? It is exhibiting something that I have never encountered before (that I can remember anyway?)

Kind of hard to describe but something strange is happening on the new spear about where you would expect the leaf to finish and the petiole to begin (once the leaf is unfurled), It sort of looks like what I would expect the top of an opening leaf to look like not the bottom???

This is a reasonably sizde potted specimen which is quite valuable to me....... its gets looked after quite well in terms of food, water (it gets lots of water) and other requirements (light etc)

As I said its hard to describe and also hard to photograph but maybe the photos tell more than the words?

Anyone else ever seen this or have any thoughts???

No Idea on whats happening Ben, but gee thats a "perfect size" for a Lemur to go inground eh, it looks in great health..maybe its giving you a hint its going to "grow wings" if you dont plant it..the wings are pointing to Mountains to the South. :) Good luck with it. Pete

I have a c.radicalis that did the same thing. The leaf opened with some funky leaflets. The next spear opened fine. I have no clue what caused it though. Plant seems healthy. Ill take a pic tomorrow

Ben , all jokes aside I wont continue on from my 1st post. :) I did see this on a Lemur here, I had to look at it to remind me..anyway, it was the 2nd new spear after its arrival from the quicker growth lifestyle in Cairns, maybe that was the problem, it slowed down? Palms are much slower down here compered to our good friends in Cairns and FNQ.. Its all good now, only the 1 leaf opened crinkled, and the leaves are nearly back to the size I bought it at 2 yrs ago ... Good news is Alls Good, hope this make you "feel at ease" Ben. :) Pete

I am sort of confident this palm will survive but I have handled a LOT of palms and never noticed anything like this on any sp, so there is concern.

Steve I would love to see any photos you have, particularly before photos.

Pete... Jokes are fine by me!! You actually got me thinking a bit as my garden is full!! My potted collection is "rare stuff" that I am keeping for my next and hopefully last garden..... Long shot I know!! This palm has been through at least 2 of my winters.

Will this palm last in a pot or should I move house and plant it in my dream garden now??

One of my Dypsis decipiens seedlings did something similar after suffering 50% leaf burn from frost. Its second turned out normal after that.

Just plant it in a deeper pot Ben, Lemurs are 'survivors'. Let me know if you want to part with it. :) Pete

Looks like a developmental anomaly to me. Probably never know the cause.

If its only affecting one spear, I'd find it of interest but wouldn't loose any sleep over it. - gmp

I have seen this before Kennybenjamin and the only cure was to have this species planted inground, inbeerwah. You're in luck, I know the right guy and the right place for it's ultimate survival.

Happy Gardening

My I had some lemurs that looked similar before they croaked. I think the mix I had them in was too heavy
