I was just looking at my Abyssinian Banana and noticed, to my suprise, it is going into flower. This plant has only been inground for 6 months!!!! It has grown super fast, I was expecting it to be around alot longer than this! Maybe this was induced by too much of the wrong fertilizer, not sure? One thing I need to know, is how to propagate this? Any help would be great!

Just after planting

by seed only as it doesn't sucker. That one is a bit crazy fruiting so early, normally it would take more than 4 years and be huge. It may not be a Ensete Ventricosum, maybe another Ensete. When it flowers more we will see more clearly what it is.

That's unusual, will be interesting to see if the seed produces similar plants.

Small bananas have formed now.

I was at the nursery I bought this from the other day, they planted one of theirs around the same time I planted mine and theirs has also gone to flower. That one only grew to half the size of mine.

Pete!

Can you give us a wide shot with some reference? I'm keen to see just how big these will get, even if you think yours was too small to flower.

I'm trying to germinate some seeds I purchased from India through ebay, and I am looking forward to putting them in the yard next spring.

Here you go Erik.

They normally grow to 6-12m, this is around the 2m mark.
