Picked up this variegated date palm yesterday.

I am not sure which species this is but it's suppose to be the variety that is grown commercially for its edible fruits

It's still in teh strap leaf stages but the variegation looks promising

Variegation goes all the way doen to the petioles so that's a good sign

The latest leaf looks plain old gree though-- but the vendor told me that the leaves come out green and the variegation becomes more prominent later.

A new leaf has emerged and it's beautifully variegated again. The previous leaf that was green remained green

I'll take a picture tomorrow

That previous leaf seems to be all green but upon closer inspection there were slivers of variegation

it's most evident when you look closely at the petiole-notice the yellow margin

Strong variegation on the petioles and leaf bases too.

The guy I bought it from just spotted this one ( and another one) in a nursery and they were growing in full sun. The other one was bigger/older and has been out in the sun all it's life.

I was a bit apprhensive about giving this baby full sun exposure during our scorching summer but now that it's the rainy season I think I'll give it a try.

Gene,

On second thought, I think it just needs some fertilizer. Send it to me and I'll bring it back to it's healthy, dark green self again!! :winkie:

I'me going to put her out in full sun-- no more shade house to protect her. But it's the rainy season over here so she should be able to adjust.
