Post your prettiest weed

Recommended Posts

I had one of these for years in a pot in Virginia Beach that I carefully tended to and gave space in my greenhouse. I knew it would probably never bloom but I'd seen photos in my books and wanted one anyway.

Now my husband machetes them down right and left and they come back stronger when we next visit Puerto Rico. He has declared war on them but I think he will lose. The photo is of one he had just toppled still in flower.

Somehow someone in Virginia left our small one in a pot out when it turned cold a couple of years ago and it died. My husband says it was me, but I'm not so sure. Pretty suspicious to me.

So what's your prettiest weed?

I heard National Geograph's gonna do a special on Bill's place. There's so much O2 hovering above his yard that the greenhouse effect is not found in his part of O'side

My prettiest weed is Hypoestes phyllostachya, the Pink Polka-Dot Plant - it grows everywhere! Here it is growing in a crack in concrete between the front wall of my house and the footpath:

These are generally considered weeds here, but I'm growing one in the front yard. It's in full bloom for about 6 full weeks - smells great and is stunningly beautiful.

If you wait to do everything until you're sure it's right, you'll probably never do much of anything.

  • 1 month later...

I have the korean form "E H Wilson" that I'll plant at my sister's in Rochester Hills MI. It is hardy to zone 5 but she's in 6. It has bluer leaves and a deeper pink blossom. No disease there as it is super rare as yet. I want her to remove both Norway Maples. They are declared weeds, have superficial roots from hell, make very deep shade and seed all over the place.

The first three photos are of Solanum americanum ( American Nightshade) yes it's deadly, but only if you eat the unripe berries or the leaves, I eat 30 or so black ones a day, the animals aren't so brave, all the more for me, they're great! in the second photo you can see the flowers if you look real close, they're about 3 or 4 mm across. The second plant is Bidens alba (shepherd's needles), in other contries it is used (the roots and leaves) for as many as forty cures, I haven't utilized this plant yet, Ed

This bloomed this morning, it's got to be my prettiest weed, and my oldest one, dug it out of a girlfriend's yard in Ormond Beach, in the middle of the lawn, at some apartments, in 1997, had it in a pot since then, Mimosa pudica (Touch Sensitive Plant), if you touch the leaves, they close up, Ed

The very prettiest weed growing in our backyard garden is what I *think* is commonly called a giant leather fern. It volunteered in an empty clay pot, back around 2005 or 6. Eventually, it broke the pot, ate it for lunch, and kept growing to now about 8 feet in height..., and I keep the spread trimmed up. It is wrapped at it's base with a ten-foot soaker hose that's connected to our underground irrigation system. You can see part of the soaker toward the bottom of the photo. I don't actually know for sure what kind of fern it is....just guessing. I think it's super pretty...and hope to keep it happy.

There are several mature Wodyetia bifurcata in my neighborhood--that helps determine my zone, right?

Some of you have a funny idea of what's considered a weed :bemused:

Agree, but then a weed is any plant growing where it is not wanted.
