Those who have visited my garden have been semi-agog over a massive Brahea hybrid that guards the entrance to my driveway.

This picture was taken in March of 2008, and it was about 4-5 feet (1.6 - 2 m) tall and as wide. When planted, it was a sad sack on the Doorway of Doom, from Dave's Defective Death Camp Husbandry. Three or four blades of grass, planted in a seven gallon pot of nearly pure sand, after the humus in the soil vanished. Put it up for sale, no one bought.

Plus, an artsy-fartsy shot of the leaves.

I'm glad no one bought!

Today, it's a monster. It stands on the order of 15 feet tall, at least, and the base of the trunk is about 3 feet across. It's visible from low-flying planes.

I call it Psycho because it's at the corner of the driveway, and anyone who tries to back in there hits the leaves of the palm, which rattle and bang against your vehicle like an angry mob of zombies with cardboard. Unsettling, anyway. A guy who tried to back a trailer full of dirt got creeped out so much he got stuck in the mud.

One of these days, I'll get an obliging Palm Talker to pose for size. Or take a pic of me.

This thing is HUGE. Maybe call it the Baretta Palm, after Robert Blake's short but sh*thouse built character in the 70s TV show.

I'm pretty sure it's a hybrid because it's too fat to be a pure armata, and too gray to be a pure brandeegii.

Here's a pic of my full-blooded brandeegii for comparison. It's about half the size of Honkin Huge Half-Breed and a lot greener.

That’s a lovely hybrid however there seems to be a cerifera suffocating under its skirt.

I think its time you looked under that skirt and do some stripping!

I think its time you looked under that skirt and do some stripping!

I did some, and everyone gagged.

Oh wait, you mean the palm! I cut off the lower leaves and the next ones lowered. It wants those dangling leaves.

That cerifera is a bit cramped, but it won't suffocate.
