Dear John  :)

thanks for asking, but iam just a ordinary palm collector or

palm enthuiest.and not a nursery guy.as and when my

collection of the desired palms are collected.iam going to

stop spending money on new purschases.since my life is

taken over my these lovely fellows.

my pets & this hobby for gardening has virtually bailed me

out of a very bad emotional situation few years back.

there are huge pits dug for certain specific palms & once

these babies are shifted from my terrace garden to ground

soil.all my concentration will be to make them appear as

massive as possible in years to come.and i pray to god

that i must live a hundred years to see my cheliean wine

palm grow to a decent height.i know iam asking too much,

see the difference,in one point of my life i used to think

why am i living but now i desire to stay in this planet for

Brilliant pics guys and thanks for sharing. Thanks Kathy and all.

Robbin I do know Jarjin Exotique very well but I have only been on the upper terrace near the car park area so it was mainly huge cacti and a massive tree like ponytail that I noticed as I was too engrossed in certain private matters (a lady!)  to take any pics. Therefore that armata must surely have been down that slope a bit?

Great views of the Med and the Grimaldi Palace from the top there.

I wish I could post B.armata pics like that from here but my armata is slow yet shrugs off our winter weather and looks very happy.

Question -and I do appreciate that its not easy - at what height does armata begin to flower?

Mine is a little over 6` at present.

Thanks

Juan

If simple is what you are looking for...  Just a quick shot this afternoon before the sun set.  It was kind of hard to get a full frame shot and keep it balanced.  I can persue this more if it is of interest.  The background can be edited out with photoshop.

Dear Robert  :)

Is the leaf in your still is that the real colour of your

breha Armeda(Blue hasper palm) ?

Since i have 3 breha armata from seeds & one purschased

from a local nursery.but seeing those stills some of our

members commented it as breha super silver.i thought

they are just playing with me.

but seeing your stills my breha that i purschased resembles

the colour of bizie lady than your palm ?

its more white and silver like bismarkia than greenish blue..

here is a still..

Kris,

Sorry, I missed your question the first time.  Those pictures are from the same leaf and are unedited (natural color).  The second picture is a close-up of the back of the leaf with a macro lens.  I was more interested in the yellow surrounding the hastula and only noticed the veining with the magnification provided by the lens.  I am not sure if it is visible to the naked eye.

All gorgeous photos, and yet the true nature of Brahea Armata just defies being photographed, at least for me.  The reason why is that Brahea armata shows so many faces in different lighting.  It is just about the most reflective palm out there, so it is most variable with different lighting.  I call it the "impressionist palm" as its most magnificent characteristic is its interaction with light.  Shadows bring it alive, but its difficult to photograph in shadows.  In the period just before sunrise and just after sunset, when other palms fade into the background, Brahea armata glows with luminosity, some call it the "grey ghost".

I love my bismarckia for their impressively massive fans and soft color, royals, kings and foxtails are graceful and gorgeous during the daylight, I love purple kings and orange crush dypsis for their colorful trunks and lush foliage, but at the twilight, the "grey ghost" is the most magnificent palm.  Its high reflectivity and many angled surfaces give rise to sharp and varied texture and shading.  I was initially attracted by its blue color, but after living with Brahea Armata for several years, its the interaction with light at the edges of the day that makes this palm so magnificent, and I am not a good enough photographer to bring it out.  Here is a photo after the freeze of '07 where I captured some of the twilight character after sunset.  I have tired of trying to capture the nature of this palm in the twilight, now I just sit back and watch the light play over the fronds and appreciate it for what it is, a dynamic display that defies a still.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

Kris,

You are so clever, bumping this thread to the top again, with your sly smile,  and it's almost a year old. I'm glad you did, as it's one of the nicest threads I've seen on this web site. The purpose was to find a logo for the Northern Calif. Palm Society, but it generated some serious discussion and some great photos. The pictures from Italy and S. France are exquisite.

Tom's very poetic description of the different faces of B. armata are very well described. Perhaps no photograph can do this beautiful palm justice. If this is to be the logo for the N. Calif chapter, I still agree that it should be an artistic rendition and kept simple. Matty had some sound professional advise.

No one can accuse the N. Calif. Chapter of rushing into anything, as this logo decission has been on the table for quite awhile. How about some of you budding artist, or professionals coming up with something? And keep it simple.

Dick,

Do you what has happened to Kathy?

It looked to me that she was leading the effort...

I have access to some photo editing resources if we can agree on the photo we want to use.

Let me know.

Okay Guys, hold the press!! I got a winner!! I just went through my archive of pictures and found this one I took when I was volunteering at the Bancroft garden. It shows a Brahea armata that is not only beautiful but is in a amazing setting. Even better yet it was taken in Northern California so it truly symbolizes  club history and  showcases what is possible to grow in that climate. If I have time I can try to do something artistic with it with photo editing software.

It was taken in April 2003. Here it is:
