I got these Sabals from a local nursery, but they did not have full ID on them, please help me put a name on them, also the guy showed me a palm growing in full shade under queen palms I thought it was a trachycarpus fortunei but the frond were too long! any ideas what it could be?

Thank you for helping me.

Escondido: the Ideal place to grow palms

Could it be? I'll try.

The big seed is a parajubea seed. Sabal #2 looks exactly like my big sabal that is a rocket. Still not sure what it is but i think is narrowed down to domingensis.

Just my two cents, Sabal 1 is minor or belonging to minor complex, Sabal 2 is palmetto and Sabal 3 is causiarum (watch out for eventual ligules as it grows older).

Thanks Steve and K. "Phoenikakias".

I remember the name domingensis, so I'll label sabal 2 with that name.

Sabal 1 as minor.

Guess I'll just have to wait some more years to be sure of what I have on #3.

Pardon my ignorance but what is "ligules"?

In regards to the seeds, how could I know if they are still good? They were slightly buried on top.

Any idea on the last one? Trachy?

Thanks.

Certainly a Trachy, maybe tagakil (hybrid fortunei X takil). Nice east asian spot you have created mixing Trachy, Arenga ( :greenthumb: nice specimen which one?) and bamboo :greenthumb::greenthumb:

Phoenikakias the Trachy photo is from a nursery I went, they didn't know what was, and it is not my yard/garden I wish it was though.

Any Sabal experts out there that can chime in?

I'm also in California and we recently bought our first sabal, tagged a minor, but still trying to determine what cultivar (posted about mine in the cold hardy forum). From the research I've done on my palm I would agree #1 is a minor. Too bad yours don't have any inflorescence/fruit yet to aid in IDing.

It might help if you could supply us with closeup photos of the front and back side of the other sabal fronds showing the costa/ hastula region, near the petiole. The mid rib and how far it extends as well. I found this site's photos helpful in my research on sabals (examples of minors as well as other sabals): http://www.biosci.utexas.edu/prc/DigFlora/Waller/costapalmate.html#top

BTW is that the "underground" trunk I'm seeing in the photos?? My sabal, which has already been planted, only has petioles rising from the ground, nothing else. As I said I'm new to this but can't imagine what else it could be. Here's a link from that same source regarding the structure of the underground trunks: http://www.biosci.utexas.edu/prc/DigFlora/Waller/trunk/SAMI8-undergnd.html. And if you click on the link to Sabal "Saxaphone" axis, it looks like it to me. If so, shouldn't this be buried below the dirt?

I didn't see a home page to the above site so have tried to click my way thru to the various pages. Here's a few more links that maybe be useful to you: http://w3.biosci.utexas.edu/prc/Sabal/Sabal-ontogeny.html, http://w3.biosci.utexas.edu/prc/Sabal/Sabal-juven.html, http://www.biosci.utexas.edu/prc/DigFlora/Waller/Texas_Dwarf.html, and http://w3.biosci.utexas.edu/prc/Sabal/Sabal-germ.html

I would ID as follows:

1) Sabal minor

2) sabal blackburiana because of the hands-like fronds reaching up, I don't think it's dominguensis

3) sabal causiarum or bermudana, the pic makes me thing bermudana

the trachy looks like martianus because of the long petioles.

rh grows a Sabal minor from seed gathered by myself. lh grows another mysterious Sabal, which I think it is palmetto. This mysterious Sabal resembles to my opinion the N. 2 Sabal in the beginning of this topic.

A couple more pics of this unidentified Sabal

Keith I am afraid we all have at least one. I have been fortunate enough to be blessed with seven.
