Hello!

I use aritificial light to grow all of my palmtrees since 6 years during the winter. and I have very good result!
The problem now is the place, but it still so cool to live and sleep in the Jungle B)

Small video to illustrate:

Why would you grow palms indoors when you live in Corse? They can grow outdoors where you live, and you can actually grow quite a few species outdoors, you would save a lot of money.

I bet grow lights are a dime a dozen out on your craiglist. Grade A ladies too :floor:

This is not in corse, this is in my house in Paris and it's kind of cold during the winter (above -14°C = 7°F)

So I prefer keep them at home with me, the most frost tolerant palmtrees are in the ground outdoor with some protection ;)

yeah girls love that

My man, you need to pack your bags and move to Polynesia. If you insist on staying in Paris perhaps investigate some LED lights. There's some good options out there and can drop your energy costs.

This kid is nutz!!!!!!!!

This kid isn't nuts, he just lives in the wrong place! Paris ain't the place for a palm lover.

Wow! You are much more dedicated to keeping your palms growing during the winter than I am. I keep my palms in the basement with no grow lights, just natural light from the windows and then move them outside in April.

In the video this is my house in Paris where I have a small garden.
I put "Corse" in my profil because there I have my holiday home and a bigger garden too ;)
In the first time I didn't use artificial light and lot of seedling died during the winter..
Now they grow even during the cold season so I have a space problem because they are bigger each year !

Thanks for the advise ;) !

But theses lights are lowcost in energy comsumption because the thermal waste is very low.

Looks like compact fluorescent lighting, they are quite efficient and more broad spectrum than the LED's. I suspect they will work better than LED's, though advances in LED's are closing the gap... I have a friend who has the latest LED lighting on his salt water reef tank, $$$$. Whatever energy efficiency advantage the LEDs have, it will take years to make up the cost difference...

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

LEDs are actually catching up not only in strength but price too. Many companies from china are building basically identical panels using quality brand name LEDs and other components and selling them for so cheap that DIYers aren't even bothering building. Its just cheaper to buy them from overseas. Some people still argue that the 1000$ panels are superior and in some ways, I'm sure they are, but I've been running a 150$ one over my tank for two years and have nothing but good things to say. Those look like some big CFLs. 100w+? How many of these are you running?

Hello,

I never tried the LED, maybe it's a good solution too.

In my instalation I have two kit.

Each kit is a 200W lamps + reflector and each kit cost 92 USD.
Then I have to remove the lamp each 2 years to keep them efficiency with the good grow light spectrum and each "bulb" cost 65 USD.

I have very good results with this instalation!

So you have to invest 184 USD at the beginning and then each two years 130 USD.

Love palms have a cost, but I don't care ;)

I've been keeping aquariums for 17 years. I have been noting with extreme interest the recent advancements in LED lighting. My local fish store is running LEDs over some live reef tanks. Some still run T5s.

Some LED systems have sunrise/sunset programs along with moonlight programs. Some can even simulate lightening that is present in a thunderstorm. Pretty cool stuff. Prices are relatively high for the bells and whistles but some of the more basic systems aren't that crazy expensive.

Spectrum/temperature (degrees K) are something you do need to watch. But for plants they are not as critical as for corals.

All the said, if the CFLs are working well then why fix something that isn't broken.

200W sounds a lot. I'll be building my own grow light soon and the most powerful FL I've found was 58W, CFLs like in the image around 20W. Or maybe you mean equivalent power of the light bulb it is designed to replace?

And keep in mind illuminance gets lower very quickly as distance is increased so usually 1 to 4 dm is the useful distance, looks like some fronds get about zero light. A lux meter is really helpful I find.

I also don't understand the hysteria to throw out FLs after x years or hours that I often hear of, as long as the lux meter shows an acceptable number they are fine.

Yep I aim to get a bit of a jungle too! But most my plants get most of their light from the sun at least the brightest part of the year, only some of them will get grow lights and only in winter.

PS Funny how I have to press "Edit" to get line feeds to show, is it the same for everyone?

Reggaton and palm trees! Reminds me of being back in Costa Rica! This guy rocks! Love it! And it's a bedroom too! How great!
