Hi All,

I have recently harvested seed from a Wodyetia bifurcata and a Adonidia merrellii and it is obviously a cross.

Here you can see the pure foxtail seed on the left side of the foxie and the smaller, red seed on the right side.

Any desire to send any to Australia? :)

Ditto to this question!! I saw one in a thread a couple of weeks ago and it's a cool looking palm!!!

Hopefully not as cold sensitive as the Adonidia? I would love to try one that's for sure!!!!!

Good luck with those babies!!!

Very interesting for sure. I would also be interested in seeing if the seed are good.

I would love to see what this cross would look like as an adult.

Can anybody upload a Fox, Fox/Ado, Ado adult comparison photo(s)?

Yes the seed does looks good.

Very hard and difficult to split but shows an embryo.

Seed is homogenous like the foxtail.

Does anyone have pics of one of these crosses as seedlings or later?

Here is the best pic I have of the foxtail.

This group of palms is surrounded by other low vegetation and rather difficut to obtain a good shot.

I am not sure if I got this one right. Is this adonidia or Acrchontophoenix cunninghamiana?

This palm is in a field of foxtails and the owner assumed it was a foxy lady. It has grown at twice the speed as the foxtails around it. However the consenus is that it is not a foxy lady but maybe a foxtail crossed with something else. Maybe this is the same cross you have???

Looks like a Veitchia cross to me. Did someone say they knew of an Adonidia cross that was purposely made? I have heard of Carpenteria crosses too with Wod. Any pictures of that around?

BTW my faxylady back crossed to a Wodyetia has sprouted and some are variegated...proving the cross. That is to say the hybrid (with the father being a variegated foxylady in this case) will produce viable seed when pollinating a Wodyetia mother!

That's good to hear about your cross Ken! Here are some pics from another thread with some weird crosses in this group.

Here's a Veitchia X Carpentaria and a Foxtail X Carpentaria.

Well Ken I remember in your previous posts about hybrids even on a earlier thread about the foxy lady. I belive you said people would be crazy to pay more then $5.00 for a 1 gallon hybrid. I would like to offer you $5.00 per seedling for every true hybrid you produce. Watcha say? I belive the Adonidia cross was found by Derek or Justin of seabreeze in someones yard. I think they said they said they had intended on doing this cross.

Neither--you got a Ptychosperma elegans, Erik.

This hybrid is certainly possible as I have seen an adult myself--they are called Christmas tail palms :)

Ok, so where does any one buys hybrid seedlings?

I sure want to see a picture of the xmastail. How about some more stories from people that are putting pollen on female palm flowers?

fiji jim, did you emasculate the inflorescence on your foxtail and screen it to prevent flying insects from visiting the female flowers? This is the only way to get an entire infructescence of viable seed. If not, I have a feeling you simply have foxtail seeds there. Bees can travel up to 3 miles from their hive in search of pollen. Your seeds look like they developed during a dry or cold season, leading to smaller size and shape. This is common in Florida as well. Also, I have a Foxtail x Christmas palm imported from Thailand- it was grown under controlled conditions and from what the grower told me, only one in several hundred seeds of this cross develop viable embryos, even after controlled pollination.

Yes Eric, we have just done adonidia x veitchia, and wodyetia x carpenteria. We'll see how they work.

Posted

Yes JD,all due care was taken as much as possible.

There was no cold or dry time during seed development.

At the same time of commencing propagation of the cross seed, I also started the other seeds in the pic of comparing the 3 types.

More than a month ago the pure Adonidia seed germinated and as yet the pure foxtail are yet to show.

I will now plant all of these so as not to have them age past viability. When they have produced the first couple of leaves it will be better for comparison and tell the truth.

So far they look much more like Wodyetia than manilas.
