Hummers and bees love these flowering plants and they are so easy to take care of. This clump has a pole behind it to give some support. Stops blooming in November from lack of sunshine.

Thanks for the comments Palm1984.

Hi Patricia - This species of Fuchsia occurs in temperate climate southern regions of Argentina and Chile, from latitude 32°50 S. to the Straits of Magellan.

It called Fuchsia magellanica. Very common hardy variety fuchsia shrub, likes high humidity and cooler temps but can grow in full sun here in Washington State.

The more common tree fuchsia are from N.Z and Africa, which I am just starting to get into. The one I have starts blooming May and end in November.

Northern Cali probably blooms all year. I’m just starting to get into the less than hardy ones, they will be blooming next year.

So you can expect a lot more pic from me next summer. :D

Thanks! I've never a Fuchsia as big as the one you are showing. Cool!

Nice.

I remember being able to grow nice Fuchsias in Orange Co when I was a kid. Easy to propagate, and a good plant that rewarded good stewardship with good blooms. Fuchsia mites have pretty much eliminated the fun nowadays, tho.

SoCal and SoFla; zone varies by location.

I love fuchsias! But . . I remember back in ancient times when we got some fuchsias into our Garden Shop of Doom in Moreno Valley.

Right near Riverside.

In August.

I wasn't there; I was on vacation.

Fuchsias got there at 10 a.m., all were dead by nightfall. They could not take the heat, alas.

Much MUCH better by the beach.

Pick up a new Fuchsia called ‘Cardinal’ (hardy fuchsia). It’s a vigorous, upright grower with single blooms. Corallas are rich, dark red. Hardy to zone 6 & up. These are some of the biggest flowers I have seen for a fuchsia. But thats not even the cool part. It grows up to 12’/4m tall. I don’t know the hardiness of it to get that tall but should be pretty impressive it first year and if it make it this winter with out dying back it will be a monster next year.

A few pics.

Here in the SF Bay Area, we still see some of the old hybrid Fuchsias that seem to endure if not resist the mite, and still look decent, but nothing like the days 20 years ago when every garden had them. Now it's all about hybrids which are resistant, or species which are immune. My microclimate here in Berkeley is perfect for most, and F. boliviana, paniculata and arborescens are three that also get tree sized here and bloom almost year round. Unfortunately not drought tolerant, so future water rationing will be hard on them. The older no-name hybrids can be surprisingly drought tolerant on a north or east exposure though.

Awesome. Can't do that here.

Gorgeous - I've never seen a tree Fuchsia before! Do all Fuchsias get big, given time?

Do cuttings root easy? This photo makes me inspired to go try some! Also, what does the trunk look like ? Bonsai candidate ?

Fantastic!

I love those things, so pretty.

But the only one that will make it in Shangri La Habra is Gartenmeister Bonstadt, and even it gets those [expletive] mites.
