Dear Friends,

I take pleasure in inviting you to this planting work of the Medemia Argun or the Nubian Desert Palm.At the moment i have 2 healthy Argun Palms which are still in industrial barrel.Inspite of repeated root pruning every 6 to 8 months fresh roots try to encircle the base of the barrel. And to know details of their growth & the methods i adopted in growing these palms kindly visit this link _ http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/10968-palm-maintenance-work/

Here are few links where you can find stills & details of some mature specimens of these Argun palms :-

Now i shall give a brief description of how we carried out this palm planting work.In the past i did have few bad experience of planting few desert palms directly into the clayey soil of our garden and had lost a couple of washy filiferas. Our friend BsMan(Bill) suggested me of raised bed planting for palms which does not like its feet to be wet during our tropical rainy season. And after following this method one washy filifera has successfully grown to about 10 feet hight and the signs are really encouraging. But blue hasper palm(Brahea armata)which was planted following this same raised bed planting method did not yield any successes. If Medemia palm behaves like Brahea Armata, then i fear similar fate !

And here's the link to that fine growing washy...

From the following post you will find stills and videos as to how we went around accomplishing this task.

Thanks & Love,

kris.

And the top soil dressing was done using coarse grade washed river sand. And in the following post you will find video of this entire operation.Hope you like it.And stills were included in this thread since most of my forum friends had difficulty in seeing videos through their smart phones. So i made it a point that future threads, posts & updates would have both stills & videos in them.

Dear Kris, you have planted a tropical plant in a place with tropical climate. I do not think that you will face any kind of problems. Brahea armata is another story because its is a warm temperate palm. I used to grow my own Medemia before outplanting in a cold frame with overhead irrigation every day during summer. Nevertheless it survived. If however you wanted a state of the art raised bed planting, I think you would have to provide the plant with twice its root zone space filled with free draining material. But I am very optimist that you will face no problems. In a similiar case with my Medemia (http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/38360-fall-is-near-and-winter-not-far-away-prep-thoughts/#entry596801) I have provided my Medemia with a pipe in to the hole enabling underground watering and fertilizing.
