I'm traveling to New Orleans this weekend for work. While I won't have a ton of time, if I can break away I wouldn't mind checking out a palmy place or two or an aquarium if their is anything near the convention center. Any suggestions?

Thank you!!!

You might try shooting a private message to Kathryn. She would be able to answer better than anyone.

French Quarter, for starters, though I'm sure K knows more.

The last time I was there I wasn't into palms but I would recommend visiting Audubon Park which has some beautiful old Live Oak trees. There are probably at least some S. palmettos there and the ride on the St. Charles streetcar through the Garden District is a great way to get there. City Park is larger and probably would also be worth investigating. You can see S. minor 'Louisiana' in their swampy habitat by walking on an elevated boardwalk at Jean LaFitte Park about 30-45 minutes south of the city over the river.

Bump: I'm headed to NOLA on Thursday, May 15, and want to take in some palmy gardens and parks. Any discoveries to share since this thread was last active? Also, how would I contact Kathryn? What is her Palm Talk ID?

Thanks!

I'm planning on flying my Cessna to New Orleans this summer, anyone know any places to buy palms down there? I could stop in other cities up north too...I'd like to load up the plane with a selection of cold-hardies before heading home;)

Esplanade Avenue on the way to City Park has a lot of palms and is a beautiful drive. Surprisingly there are quite a few decent size majesty palms around metro New Orleans. Not sure how they survived the cold winter this year.

The zoo is great. I was just there 3 weeks ago, and I couldn't believe what they had growing in the ground! And it was evident, that its cold in the winter, and hot in the summer!

IIRC, there are some large Livistona decora planted around Harrah's casino. And I swear I saw a Brahea, but might have been something else, off of Magazine St. somewhere. A lot of the Sabals I saw peeking out of walled gardens looked much more massive than regular palmetto, but not sure of the species.

That Jean Lafiite Historical Park was my first nature reserve in the US. I went there last year in April. Beautifull place and a nice mixture of temperate and subtriopical flora and fauna. And also very nice big Sabal minor. Some with short trunks.

It looks like a sort of local ecotype. But I have seen also smaller Sabal minor not far from that place.
