A friend of mine recently acquired a garden nearby and it has a few unusual palms in it. He sent me these two photos, asking for an identification and I would like some opinions - so any ideas?

No--I meant furfuraceum. Your right, Randy--conjugatum is the squat little stubby one.

Thanks for your quick and positive identifications! :) Dictyosperma it is then, and according to the Kew site, there's only one species, D. album but with three var. names:

Dictyosperma album var. album

Dictyosperma album var. aureum

Dictyosperma album var. conjugatum

At this point I think my friend will be perfectly happy to simply refer to his palm as Dictyosperma album! :)

I have a Dictyosperma album var. Rubrum growing in my garden, why isn't that on the Kew site?

I had heard conjugatum and furfuraceum were the same palm.

That name is on the Kew site but not as a valid name. It's shown as a synonym for Dictyosperma album var. album. And furfuraceum is also listed as a synonym for D. album var. album,

I got a D. furfuraceum from Floribundapalms since I believed it would be something different.

Could somebody explain me the difference if it does exist?

Many thanks

No and Yes... No, in that conjugatum does not hold the tassels along the edges of the leaf like furfuraceum does. Yes, in that they are taxonomically considered the same palm and no variations are technically recognized. Conjugatum is a squat, stubby princess that looks noticeably different than the standard form.

Philippe, your palm will have the string-like fibers on the edges of the leaves--that is what makes furfuraceum stand alone.
