Let's start this post to explore the IPS in great detail. There have been posts before that outline the history as well as very current topics but the whole idea of the IPS is not often discussed.

Many of the members here are not members of IPS but I would urge any of you that love this place to join! The IPS is more and more being driven by membership that have been reading PalmTalk for a long time. Can you imagine the benefit Directors get from being able to know what members are saying on PalmTalk?

Our moderator has everything you need to get started. He works for the members and is happy to help anyone. Our rules are strict because our members expect us to run a tight ship. When you see the pictures and get the information you are looking for, within minutes sometimes, you will be happy to follow the rules since you can see how effective they are in bringing you the most up to date and correct information on the 'net about palms!

The number one mission of IPS is to publish "Palms" our journal. This is a scientific endeavor closely linked to our mission statement and it is the mainstay of our organization. The editors, board members, contributors and members that make this publication happen are the heart and soul of our organization! To fund this publication we have a fundraiser every 2 years. Can you imagine? Just once every two years we ask members to give a little extra and join us on a huge palm expedition to some of the most palmy places on earth. Win Win!

PalmTalk is a newcomer here at IPS. Yes, believe it or not PalmTalk is a newbie! Well it may seem old to some of us but some members have never even looked at this site. As PalmTalk has grown it has shown itself to be not only a great addition that fits our mission statement but also a potential fund raiser. We all look forward to our new 2014 IPS donor stickers I think! Alice I have yours covered, lol. (inside joke...)

The leadership of the BOD including its officers and executive committee are now moving towards doing business here on PalmTalk. Soon we will have a very modern and streamlined governing body that will help all of us know what's going on and how we can help to make all of IPS a better place!

PalmTalk has been a tremendous education for us, so Michael and I made a donation to show our appreciation for this website forum. We also signed up for a three year family membership at CFPACS. And then we joined IPS on Oct 18 with the family membership during that tumultuous time when everything kinda got bonkers. But even tho it was a little bit crazy for a bit, we love this forum, and all you nutty PalmTalkers! Long Live PalmTalk Forever! :greenthumb::wub:

Do we have to be happy about that?

I wish IPS is more listening to IPS-Palmtalk members and I am afraid BOD do business on Palmtalk... when I see the PM issue and the new TOS...

Like Shirley and Michael, I love Palmtalk and made donations last year, even waiting for 2014 PT supporter, but when I read some IPS directors posts here, I am not so sure...

I want to take the chance to highlight one of the many good things done by the IPS. I chose to make a separate post on the subject of research grants so click on the link to read more: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/40071-ips-endowment-grant-information/

Please feel free to add what you value about the IPS as we work to tweak the things we'd like to change. I'm optimistic and will do my best to listen.

Don't worry the directors have their own place to do business, it is not in an open forum so you will be saved from the boring stuff. On the other hand when we do have important business that everyone would be interested in you can bet we will be announcing it here first!. So far about half the directors have tried out PalmTalk so that is a start. All of you that love this place should urge all the directors to start doing business here so we can communicate openly and freely with each other as well as come here to see what our members, both paid and unpaid, are saying!

Ken,

I appreciate you taking the time to let us all know a bit more about the IPS. I also would like to know more about the current and future plans of the BOD. As many others have already expressed, I love Palm Talk and have found the posts here informative, valuable and lots of fun. I was unaware that there is a three year membership and will certainly sign up for one when my current membership expires.

The best news that you shared was that more and more BOD members are joining PT. I greatly appreciate the research that the IPS underwrites but it seems that it sometimes forgets the importance of the relationship between the botanists and the palm growers. Input from both is needed to increase palm knowledge and the propagation and growth of palms around our precious planet.

I applaud the IPS for organizing tours to the world’s greatest palm gardens. A number of people have expressed the opinion that individuals can journey to the tour locations on their own. However for me, and I am sure many other people, part of the joy of those tours is being among palm lovers and palm experts from around the world who contribute to my knowledge.

I forgot to mention that I hope the BOD will be more receptive to the ideas contributed by its members and that their input will be considered prior to any changes that will affect Palm Talk's and other interested IPS members. I believe that doing so will result in a more positive and productive relationship.

I think everyone on PalmTalk and especially members like me (30 years, life member!) want more frequent reports about what the BOD is doing and planning. Soon I hope we can get the minutes from Peru posted here. They are full of information about our direction. I hope more of the members will ask for those minutes so we can see exactly what is going on.

As PalmTalk matures it will allow us to have an open view into the IPS and how it works. Members will want to help as they see areas where then can expend their own resources to help the other members to enjoy membership even more. We have seen this many times already and even in the current work we have had brand new volunteers step up with legal, internet, banking, insurance, web design and more! It is amazing how much influence a small little post here on PalmTalk can help IPS in such huge ways as compared to before PalmTalk.

Lets keep up the learning, teaching, exploring, photography, growing, naming, discovery, entomology, disease, morphology, structural, geographical, social, ethnological, climatological, and PRA!, studies right here on PalmTalk as well as learning how to make the IPS a perfect example of a non profit, scientific organization for the world to enjoy!
