As I traveled by three-wheeler, it was quite freezing in the mountains of Namunukula, on the way to Badulla, around 1000 m elevation, where UVA tea is growing.

Great pictures. What plant is growing on the terraced hill side of the first picture? Also, what is the large building in the valley on last picture?

I was just going to ask the same thing Paul. I saw the tall, skinny, crownshaft palm and thought that it must not get too terribly cold there very often. According to a certain weather website, it did get down to 50F in Nuwara Eliya today. Lows are forecast to be low 50s and highs low 60s for the next 5 days. Could feel chilly to those from lowland areas.

But tea plantations are also planted regularly with ugly decideous trees they trim hardly, these trees stabilize the steep soil with roots and give half shade.

In some other places, they use a Grevillea species which is less ugly.

William and Paul, this poor tall one is a Areca catechu maybe the last Areca growing in this elevation (They don't exist in Nuwara Eliya where you can see few Archontophoenix , Phoenix reclinata...)

Kindest regards

Philippe
