G'day g'day,

Today I thought I would share my success with carpoxylon seeds, I got hold of 10 recently and have 9 good sized sprouts! First time I have germinated carpoxylon seeds and am surprised about a few things..

* They were very large seeds!

* They sprouted very quickly without extra heat applied, these were put into this pot on 18th Feb 2014.

* The sprouts show a pronounced pattern not unlike that of a mealy bug dypsis. I found this interesting as the larger specimens show no signs of this pattern, they are all smooth and slick.

* The size of the shoot it large, 25cm before first sign of an open leaf. Large seed equals large sprout I suppose?

Any way all good fun and I love a successful germination!

While I'm at it I might as well share some more pics of carpoxylon... I think I have a thing for this palm! Green, graceful and chunky!!

Since I started with the baby's I will post some pics of progressively larger specimens..

The smallest in my garden is 6 ft tall, full blazing sun... Sometimes very very hot!!

Then the largest in my garden, about 9 ft, semi shade.

I was in Port Villa, Vanuatu last year and found a row of about 5 that were street plantings right near the ship / boat terminal.... Bloody beauties!! ( I stupidly didn't take my camera off our cruise this day so we bought an old school disposable one and got these pics, these are photos of photos if you get my drift )

I couldn't resist but to pull the old leaf off, it wasn't attached at all just caught up a bit on the palm!!

More carpoxylon pics are welcome here, particularly tiny or huge specimens!

Good job, very well done !!!........ I am looking for a replacement. I left mine in my last garden and it was just starting to trunk (plus it was variegated!!).....No doubt it is dead now as the new owner rented the property out and it wouldn't have received any water.

How exciting! I bought a 3 gal and was wondering where to put it, glad to hear you had good luck with full sun and heat :)

Ben, you should be getting good growth from here on out. They are robust growers once they get established and past a certain size.

Big and chunky is right.

Great success Kenny,

They seem to grow quite quickly at this stage! The pictures above are wonderful.

Thanks for the responses people! Yes the 2 in my garden are not slow, I'm very happy with their growth!! And yes I was obviously very happy with this success!!

After my success with the first 10 seeds I thought I would get some more....

Another 30 were in the mailbox for me today.

This pic belongs at the top of the thread but just for completeness these are the seeds...

Nice comic! That second pic tells me your palm is settling in nicely... It's spreading it's roots and loving it! It's obvious to see the new growth since you have planted it.

Strangely, the Carpoxylum I had didn't show any pronounced pattern but were very bright green and it seems to me they were thicker.

Here pics of the seeds sprouting:

Have to laugh sorry, out of probably 10, all but 1 that I had croaked, same thing in pots,in the ground, didn't matter they always croaked. The one survivor I have is in the ground for it's 3rd year and actually looks great.

Ahhh words of encouragement! If everyone would please say a prayer, think positive thoughts or send good vibes out to my little Carpoxylon, that would be greatly appreciated :)

Rob,

The small Carpoxylum I planted before the drought didn't die, I hope it's a positive information :)

I wonder how fast these seedlings will start to show a good growth and make bigger leaves...

Until now they survived the drought

Rob,

I still hope I'll meet PalmTalkers below the Oncosperma filamentosum in Peradeniya, and we'll say: …..it 's you, isn't it?

Hi Ben, here is my Carpoxylon, this was the first plant I grew from seed. It is approx. 3 years old and has been inground for 1.5years

This is the only picture of my Carpoxylon. Sorry it's not more clearly shown - it's there behind the Heterospathe elata in the foreground. Has been in the ground since October last year...took about 3 months to sort itself out, but has begun to motor along since.

Regards

Michael.

She's a beauty Pete!! Looks like it's on it's 4th leaf??

I have sprouted 1000's of seed of various sp. but still don't have a single palm I have grown from seed in my garden. Might have to plant one just to change that little fact!

Do you guys think they can handle full sun at an early age {seedling}?
