Well, feed me Seymour Little Shop of Horrors! Our Tahina is healthy but slow growing and clearly you've demonstrated that we are feeding it the wrong plant food. How often do you have to provide it with the heavy human protein hit? Thanks for the feeding tip. I'm cautiously checking the neighborhood for likely candidates.

Mike!

Would Lee agree with this new feeding program and candidates search?

Philippe,

I disapprove! I'm quite fond of our neighbors.

Philippe,

Well, I guess my plan is foiled. I was going to say . . .

  1. Lee would undoubtedly disapprove but then her palm fertilizing program has always been more conservative than mine.
  2. She's nearly 5000 miles away at the moment and may simply not notice a few missing neighbors right away.
  3. By the time she spots the growth surge in our Tahina I'll have had time to think up some kind of a cover story.

But obviously I'm already discovered so I'm on the way to throw a handful of Osmocote at the Tahina and hope that helps.

Mike,

Don't forget to remove the sunglasses of any candidate, next time!
What will you do with the swimwear?

That Tahina is so strange! what are your Lodoicea need as food? same?

Kevin,

In all seriousness our Tahina is about half the size of those in Hilo (all from same seedling batch) and maybe a fourth the size of yours.or less. Maybe this is just one of those palms that isn't going to grow very fast in our hot dry climate. When did yours go into the ground and what have you done to achieve this kind of growth. Maybe we should be doing something different with ours.

For those more obvious places a mason jar works just fine as a transport vessel. Just be sure and label unfit for drinking water, lol.

Anyone in the great state of California growing this? If so, please post a pic or two even if your plant is small. Mine's REALLY small and I just transferred it from a 4" container to another 4" but deeper container. I hope this palm has decent possibilities in CA.

Dave, if you try them put them in protection. They hate the cold.

I have two friends in the Phoenix area growing this outside and they only just survive.

I grow mine in a greenhouse and it looks happier, but still not thriving.  The "tripod

of death" as it's referred to here is 1) low humidity 2) hot temps 3) glaring sun.

With all these, it is an uphill battle for the Tahinas.  But boy can I grow saguaros!

Since that palm wants heat first, moisture second its probably a wash.
