I had Venturi systems in there to add oxygen, but the water comes off peat and is a tea colour. It absorbs sunlight really well. So the top part is as warm as a bath but underneath it’s much colder. Ive made some new billabongs on the other side of the house for drainage purposes with raised beds around them, that will be fully planted up in time. My plan is to get some local Pygmy perch in there. Not big enough to eat as they only grow to about 7cm long but they are cute.

My largest Chatham Island nikau lighting up in the sun coming through a break in the canopy. It looked better in reality though. It caught my eye today.

The Chatham Island Nikau in the above picture was planted out in 2015 as a small palm only around 50cm tall. Now it is taller than me and about 2.5m tall. I think I germinated it in 2011 while still in Perth. So if the information is correct that Rhopalostylis flower at about 15 years of age I'm expecting it to flower around 2026 in about 3 to 4 years from now. I reckon it will have the start of a clear ringed trunk by then at least. I just love Rhopalostylis.

They were planted around 6 and a bit years ago at the end of 2017. They were in 5L pots. I grew them from Perth seed.

It's looking so lush and established now Tyrone.  I could have sworn you only moved there 4 or 5 years ago.  It was a shock to find you've been there for 10. Where did that time go ?  You've made your own slice of paradise down there. In the meantime I will still slog away to make something special out of my table size yard.

I’m battling dead pine trees at the moment. It’s really getting me down. Since the floods of 2021 which killed around half of them, I’ve removed around 40 at a guess. I’ve got a couple of precarious ones still near my shadehouse. I’ve had to evacuate half the shadehouse to my patio area because it could come down any day and it’s leaning towards the shadehouse. The short days mean that even the weekends aren’t long enough to do much with everything else that has to happen in life. Once the bad pines are gone I can start a whole new area.

@Tyrone I had the same problem with ~40 year old water oaks here.  They grow fast up to 70-80 feet tall and then die.  I regret not just paying one person to bulldoze all of them all at once.  It probably would have been a lot cheaper, faster, and with less collateral damage to stuff underneath them.

Well brown palms iam jealous you have a green lawn all I get is gum leaves and brown grass but it’s nice to see your garden and a fantastic job you have done as one gardening to another I know the feeling you feel top garden Tyrone with your hands tied a lot by plant restrictions in your state iam amazed you been able to expand your collection to such a great garden also your up against your climate you can garden two green thumbs 👍👍🌱from me
