Palms in China

Palmaceae

Recommended Posts

I had the opportunity to visit China twice for business in the past few years, the last time was last September. I visited 3 different cities in China, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Liuzhou. Shanghai is on the East China Sea and has a temperate-sub tropical climate, Guangzhou is on the Tropic of Cancer and has a true sub tropical climate and Liuzhou is north of the Tropic of Cancer and has a sub tropical climate. I spent most of my time (3 weeks total) in Liuzhou which is approximately 270 miles NE of the Vietnam border.

I wanted to share some pictures with you of the sites and palms!

First is Shanghai,

Traffic is crazy in China, someone told me that there are no traffic laws, just suggestions! :yay:

Everyday I would see this, they would just get up and move on!

Yes that is a young child on that scooter, you would see a whole family on a scooter. We do not realize how blessed we are here in the US.

Some of the food was good, but it is not like the americanized Chinese food we have here in the states. And yes dog is on the menu and I did eat donkey. But at least they did have some american restaurants there for a break from the local food.

In Guangzhou I saw Royal palms, but one palm I did not see were Coconuts. China is a beautiful country and I was blessed to be able to visit and meet some very nice, amazing people. Hope you enjoyed the virtual visit!

Much more palmy than I expected! Such dramatic landscapes, and the temples are really beautiful. I enjoyed the photos and your commentary, thank you!

Awesome! Love that karst topography, it's so lush and green there! A trip to Southern China is definitely on my bucket list

Thank you for the nice photo tour. I've never been to Liuzhou (city of willows) but I've been to the other two big cities. Shanghai and Guangzhou. Did you visit Chenshan Botanical Garden and South China Botanical Garden? Their palm collections are still not that impressive, but I am sure it is just a matter of time.

Such a beautiful country buried in smog. Unfortunately that is one of the things I remember about my trip.

No I was not able to visit Chenshan or South China botanical gardens as my time was very limited in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Liuzhou is a beautiful city, actually they called it a small town, 3 million people! It is a lot smaller than Shanghai aand Guangzhou which has over 20 million each.

I was also very surprised of how palmy it was there, since I was there both times in late summer, it was still very hot and humid, reminded me of Florida.

Yes I loved those Archontophoenix groves, beautiful. Of course the locals use those toilets, even had them in the airports, but they did have in some areas such as the airport, hotels, etc....... western toilets.

Taipei is also palmy. Royals seem to accompany most important buildings (government, museums, hospitals). Taipei also has lots and lots of scooters and everyone, including Japan, seems to have those traditional toilets.

Nice to see the trachys in habitat. And so many photos!

What a great trip that must have been. That grove of kings was pretty awsome (along with the topography). You know come to think of it grove of most types of palms looks pretty cool.....thanks for posting.

Thanks for the posts. I had a layover in Guangzhou on the way to the biennial in Thailand. I was not brave enough to venture out and look around, but its nice to have an idea what was out there!

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!
