Which Dypsis to plant?

Ok, after much deliberation I decided to remove some bamboo from the front of my house which I planted to give protection from the afternoon sun.

it succeeded in this respect but the mess and the constant unblocking of leaf filled gutters caused me to re think my strategy.

The result, 49sq metres of space to create my own "little" Dypsis garden.

I have some ready to go in the ground and some on hold at Palms for Brisbane(my local palm shop) but I would be interested to read what palm talkers would plant in a garden in South East Queensland which gets a fair bit of afternoon sun. I realise the sun hardy Dypsis will have to be planted earlier to create the canopy for the more delicate gems but I have a list of purchases below.

What about Dypsis Cabadae or Pembana mate, won't be a problem in our climate

Yeah they look great when they split. I'm starting to think 49sq m is not a lot of room. I have a psammophila too now. Do we know anybody who has an ambo?

Looks like a great space for planting, much larger than I thought it was! And Dypsis..... Your speaking my language there!!

Are you thinking of a Dypsis only area or just looking for the best few Dypsis possible in that area? I note decipiens is in your list above, do you have one? Not many of those around here from my experience.... They will grow fine but I have yet to find one available for sale?

For your first round of planting I would suggest: ( all Dypsis of course )

Lastelliana

Carlsmithii

Dark mealy bug

Ambositrae

Pilulifera ( also hard to find but you might get lucky here? )

Lanceolata

Pembana

Hovitriendra ( I always get confused with this name but I know the plant well, you will find these available )

Brevanoidies ( Bef )

Almost impossible to find but also...

Prestoniana

Cannaliculata ( or tokoravinia.... Jurassic park?? )

This looks like a fun project, I would be keen to help with design / plant placement if you want a second opinion??

To answer a couple of your questions

I'm going to go the whole 49m ish on Dypsis.

I would love to have your input and advice on placing palms and obviously the garden will evolve but I am going to go with a full dypsis garden.

The list I have compiled is a wish list, if I cant get them I am flexible but its all going to be dypsis.

I have never seen a good photo of a large specimen but there appears to be a bit of hype about Dypsis ifanadianae, could be a good talking point for your new Dypsis garden if you can find one?

Thanks for your input Steve. I will have another 20 or so metres at the front on the opposite side of the house so Madagascar will get a look in there perhaps. The Dypsis garden is a project I have wanted to do for a while.

Next to no chance as far as I am aware? Not only Brisbane but Australia wide these seem impossible to obtain currently? We need a generous person to send some seed into this country, I'm sure it would grow here very happily.

Also a similar dypsis is a ambooza, pretty similar, Roma st parklands has some awsome ones, don't start me on marojejyi hard to get seed alright

Hey Bismarck.

Firstly, great idea.

But your looking at this all wrong.

Like you say, you're going to need to plant a few of the big full sun Dypsis initially to create your canopy. And plant big solitary species, clumpers will take up too much room down the track and eat up understory space in the future.

But your real issue isn't which to plant, but which of these big Dypsis you can get your hands on.

Then decide what to plant.

Ok just an update on my dypsis garden.

Planted today from R to L.

sp dark mealy bug, carlsmithii, pilulifera.

Bringing up the rear is a pembana.

To say I'm excited is an understatement.

It wasn't too bad Ben after all the rain. I borrowed the auger from work which helps. Like most of Brisbane its that thick clay which when wet is pretty tough to dig into with a shovel.
