S. amara for sure. Too bad it's so slow as a young plant! It's also the best Syagrus for hurricane prone areas, according to Fairchild.

In this area for some unknown reason we have a multitude of extremely old Syagrus schizopylla. True bizzare monsters over 20 feet tall with that dizzy strange Seuss frizz at the top look. I speculate that Henry Flagler's plant man made trips to Brazil and these are the remnants.

S. coronata with that swirling trunk design is also a keeper.

I'm usually not a big fan of hybrids, but I have to admit that Syagrus × montgomeryana is the most good looking of all Syagrus in my opinion.

At the Gardens by the Bay they have a whole grove of Syagrus × montgomeryana situated between groves of the parent species - S. romanzoffiana grove on one side and S. schizophylla on the other.

I saw S. cearensis for the first time at Montgomery Botanical during the Biennial, thought those paired trunks were really cool! :)

Syagrus botryophora. At least at a young age.

My favorite is Syagrus Montgomeryana. That's a good looking hybrid. Alex, sounds like a cool layout they have at Gardens by the Bay.

Syagrus sancona for me..........although I don't have one :bummed:

Syagrus botryophora is one of my favorites until it grows so tall that I can no longer trim off the dead leaves, which then detract from its beauty, IMHO. I'm also growing S. amara, S. pseudococos, S, rushiana, S. cardenasii, which I like a lot. Then there are many of the short or dwarf type Syagrus which I really like but are mostly unavailable yet. altho' I do have a small plant of S. flexuosa and S. vagans. I hope I can get S. santosii one day too!

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Syagrus botryophora, the fastest grower for me.

I have nothing but praise for Syagrus schizophylla. I my opinion one the most spectacular palms. I do not understand why it is so uncommon.

I am also falling in love with my Sygrus amara. They are slow and after 12yrs are just starting to show some trunk.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c
